Recently, students of Apeejay Svran Global School, Sector 21-D, Faridabad, participated in a vibrant cultural activity where they created the traditional Korean lantern known as the Chon Sa Chorong. The engaging hands-on session offered learners an opportunity to explore Korean heritage while expressing their creativity through art and craft.
The activity was organised as part of the school’s efforts to promote global cultural awareness among students. Under the guidance of their teachers, students enthusiastically designed and assembled colourful lanterns inspired by the traditional Korean chorong lantern. Historically, such lanterns were used as portable lights and were also associated with celebrations and ceremonies in Korea.

The lantern, with its vibrant hues and elegant design, symbolises light, hope, harmony, and celebration in Korean culture. Traditionally, these lanterns often feature bright colours such as red and blue, representing balance and harmony inspired by the concept of yin and yang.
During the activity, classrooms transformed into lively, creative spaces as students carefully cut, folded, and decorated paper to craft their lanterns. The process encouraged them to focus on detail, coordination, and design. While shaping their lanterns, students learned about the cultural significance of traditional Korean art forms and how lanterns have historically been used in festivals and ceremonies.

Beyond being an art exercise, the activity served as a meaningful learning experience that blended culture, creativity, and craftsmanship. It helped students develop important fine motor skills, patience, and imagination while also exposing them to traditions from another part of the world. Teachers explained the cultural story behind the lantern, allowing students to understand how light in many cultures symbolises positivity, guidance, and celebration.
The completed lanterns filled the classroom with colour and festive energy, reflecting the students’ enthusiasm and artistic flair. Each lantern represented not only a creative accomplishment but also a deeper appreciation for global traditions and cultural diversity.

Activities like these highlight the school’s commitment to experiential learning, where students gain knowledge through interactive and creative engagement. By exploring traditionslike the Korean Chon Sa Chorong lantern, students broaden their cultural perspective and develop respect for the rich heritage of different countries.
The colourful lanterns proudly displayed by the students stood as glowing symbols of creativity, unity, and cross-cultural learning, making the activity both educational and memorable for everyone involved.
