The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) declared the class XII results back in May, while some students already had a career trajectory in mind, there may be some students who are still unclear what to pursue. In one of the earlier articles, we listed 8 reasons to pursue law as a profession in India. But does this profession require certain traits to excel?
Pursuing a career in law is not just about acquiring the right degree; it involves nurturing a set of core traits that are essential for success in this demanding field. From exceptional communication skills to critical analytical abilities, a prospective lawyer must develop a diverse range of skills.
According to Adnan Irshad, Assistant Professor and Academic Coordinator, Apeejay Stya University-School of Legal Studies, being a successful lawyer requires more than just legal knowledge. “It demands a set of core traits that are crucial in this demanding profession. Foremost, critical thinking and analytical skills enable one to dissect complex cases and craft strategic solutions. Equally important are empathy and integrity, which ensure that our practice not only seeks justice but also respects the human elements of each case. Last, resilience and adaptability are indispensable, as the legal landscape is continually evolving. These traits together form the cornerstone of not just a competent lawyer, but a commendable one,” the educator shared.
Here are some key traits that are generally beneficial for aspiring lawyers:

Strong Communication Skills: Lawyers must be adept at both written and oral communication. The ability to articulate thoughts clearly and persuasively is crucial in courtrooms, negotiations, and even when drafting legal documents.
Analytical Ability: The practice of law involves a significant amount of problem-solving. Lawyers need to be able to analyse large amounts of information, understand complex issues, and devise strategies based on varying interpretations and potential outcomes.
Attention to Detail: Legal documents can be dense and complex, and small details can have major implications. Precision in reviewing contracts, laws, and evidence is crucial to effectively practice law.

Research Skills: Much of law practice involves extensive research. Being able to efficiently find and interpret laws, precedents, judicial opinions, and other legal resources is essential.
Persistence and Perseverance: The path to becoming a lawyer is rigorous, and the profession often involves long hours and challenging cases. Persistence and perseverance are necessary traits to meet these demands.
Ethical Judgment and Integrity: Lawyers are expected to abide by a strict code of ethics and must be able to make judgment calls that align with legal standards and moral principles.
Interpersonal Skills: Being personable and able to work well with diverse groups of people is important. Lawyers often work with clients from various backgrounds and must be able to foster trust and understanding.

Critical Thinking: The ability to think critically and challenge points of view is essential, especially in developing arguments and strategies.
Adaptability: The legal landscape can change quickly, and lawyers must be adaptable to new laws, technologies, and strategies.
