Do you remember that senior from school or college who shared advice that helped you make a key decision? Student-to-student including senior and junior is invaluable, offering unique perspectives, experience, and guidance that can significantly shape a learner’s academic and professional journey.

One of the primary advantages of seniors mentoring juniors is the wealth of experience they bring. Adding his perspective, Rohan Mahajan, an alumnus from Apeejay Institute of Management & Engineering Technical Campus, Jalandhar (AIMETC) explained, “Student-to-student mentoring , where senior students guide juniors, offers various advantages. Junior students benefit from personalised guidance, helping them understand difficult subjects and choose suitable courses. Mentors provide support that help them transition to a new academic environment smoother. This relationship boosts confidence, sense of belonging, and enhances academic performance. For senior students, mentoring develops leadership and communication skills, also increasing their knowledge. It creates a supportive community, promoting collaboration and mutual growth.”

He further added, “I myself had been in this place during my academics , where I mentored the juniors for placement drives like what questions companies asked, interview , GD and also how to prepare a resume, etc. Also, I got the opportunity to interview the juniors during appointing new placement coordinators where they faced their seniors and answered various questions that would be possibly asked during placement rounds.”

Having navigated similar paths, seniors possess practical insights into overcoming challenges and making informed decisions. Their firsthand experience can help juniors avoid common pitfalls and seize opportunities that might otherwise go unnoticed. For instance, a senior who has successfully interned at a prestigious firm can provide invaluable tips on securing such positions, from crafting a compelling resume to acing interviews. Sharing a similar viewpoint, Sumit Pandey, a student of Apeejay Stya University, highlighted that for student-to-student mentorship one can use examples which are more relatable. The Apeejay student also added that student-to-student mentoring can make approaches for topics easy, which one may not be comfortable to share with teachers.

Juniors often feel more comfortable seeking advice and asking questions from seniors than from teachers or professors. This peer-to-peer interaction creates a safe space for juniors to express their doubts and concerns, promoting a more open and conducive learning atmosphere. Additionally, seniors can offer emotional support, helping juniors navigate the often stressful and overwhelming periods of academic life.

Furthermore, mentorship from seniors can significantly enhance networking opportunities. Seniors often have established connections with professionals, professors, and industry experts. By introducing juniors to these networks, they open doors to internships, job opportunities, and collaborative projects. This expanded network can be crucial in launching a junior’s career, providing them with a head start in their professional journey.

At the same time, mentoring also benefits seniors, allowing them to hone their leadership and communication skills. By guiding juniors, seniors learn to articulate their knowledge and experiences effectively, fostering personal growth and self-confidence. This reciprocal relationship ensures that both mentors and mentees gain from the experience, creating a cycle of continuous learning and development.

All in all, student-to-student mentoring improves the educational experience, encouraging personal and academic development for both mentors and mentees. It’s true that senior-junior mentorship is a symbiotic relationship that significantly benefits both parties. And this dynamics not only enhances individual growth but also strengthens the academic and professional community as a whole.
