Walking into Apeejay School, Faridabad, in 1997 as a PCMB student, Ankur Sood never imagined the school would leave such a lifelong impact. Today, he leads global test automation strategy at IBM India, drawing heavily on the values, confidence, and communication skills he developed at school. In this insightful conversation, he takes us through his inspiring professional journey and the unforgettable lessons from his alma mater.

What stands out to you most about your time at this school?

When I joined here, I came from a Hindi-medium background and wasn’t fluent in English. But this school changed that completely. The teachers never made me feel uncomfortable. They encouraged conversations, built confidence, and gave me the space to grow. I still remember how welcoming the environment was – no one looked down on anyone. Also, the school labs and infrastructure were excellent, far better than my previous schools. Teachers like my Biology ma’am, were strict yet nurturing. She even became emotional when she met us at the last alumni meet!

How did your career unfold after school?

I had taken both Engineering and Biology in Class 12, which initially confused me. I was preparing for all kinds of entrance exams. I finally chose engineering and graduated in 2004. My career began with a modest job in Delhi, but soon I joined HCL and then moved to IBM, where I’ve been for over 16 years. I also spent five years in the UK as an Onshore Test Lead. Eventually, I returned to India due to family commitments.

How did the school influence your professional values?

It instilled values of ethical competition and mutual respect. Whether it was during cultural programmes or morning assemblies, we were taught to aim high – but never at someone else’s cost. Even now, in my global teams at IBM, I carry those same principles.

Do you stay in touch with your school community?

Absolutely. I’m in regular contact with batchmates through WhatsApp and Facebook. Many of us meet at weddings, family events, or alumni reunions. Those bonds are still very strong.

What message would you share with current students?

Never get disheartened by small failures. Your roots at Apeejay School are strong – they’ll help you soar. Trust your teachers, absorb all you can, and keep spreading your wings. The sky is truly the limit.
