The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has commenced the Civil Services Main Examination 2025 today, August 22. The prestigious exam will continue till August 31, 2025, across multiple centres in India, with sessions scheduled on August 22, 23, 24, 30, and 31.
Only candidates who cleared the preliminary examination earlier this year are eligible to appear for the mains. Unlike the prelims, which focus on objective-type questions, the mains stage evaluates descriptive writing, analytical ability, and critical thinking. It is a crucial step in the three-tier selection process leading to the country’s top administrative posts.
Exam Timings
The exam is conducted in two sessions daily. The morning session runs from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with the entry gate closing at 8:30 AM. The afternoon session is scheduled from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM, with the last entry allowed at 2:00 PM. Candidates have been strictly warned that even a minute’s delay will result in disqualification for that paper, as gates will shut sharply at the cut-off time.
Mandatory Items
Candidates must carry a printed copy of their e-admit card along with a valid photo ID such as Aadhaar, Passport, Voter ID, or PAN. Two passport-sized photographs are also recommended in case of blurred admit card images. Additionally, candidates should bring black ballpoint pens, pencils, a non-programmable calculator if required, and a transparent water bottle.
Prohibited Items
Mobile phones, smartwatches, earphones, books, notes, or any electronic gadgets are banned inside the exam hall. Candidates are also advised not to carry bags or heavy items, as storage facilities will not be provided at the venue. Only simple analogue watches are permitted.
Strict adherence to rules and preparedness are essential, as even minor lapses can jeopardise months of effort.
