Mirik, a charming tourist destination, is nestled in the tranquil hills of Darjeeling district in West Bengal, India. Situated at an altitude of 1,767 meters, Mirik enjoys pleasant weather year-round, making it a favored spot for visitors seeking a serene retreat. The town’s natural beauty, combined with its easy accessibility, has made it a popular destination for tourists.

The centerpiece of Mirik is Sumendu Lake, a scenic spot surrounded by a garden on one side and pine trees on the other. The Indreni Pull, an elegant arching footbridge, connects the two sides, creating a picturesque view. A 3.5-kilometer-long road encircles the lake, offering tourists a pleasant walking path with the majestic Kanchenjunga visible on the distant horizon. Visitors can indulge in boating on traditional shikaras or enjoy pony rides along the lake’s perimeter, making for delightful leisure activities.
Beyond the lake, Mirik boasts numerous attractions, including viewpoints offering breathtaking views of sunrises, sunsets, and the surrounding landscape. The town is also home to several tea gardens, monasteries, temples, orange orchards, and flower gardens, including vibrant orchid displays. Mirik’s proximity to Darjeeling (49 kilometers) and Bagdogra (52 kilometers) makes it easily accessible for travelers coming from these locations.
The region is renowned for its tea gardens, with eight estates located in the Mirik area. Thurbo Tea Estate, one of the finest, is situated just 2 kilometers from the lake. Visitors can tour the factory with prior permission from the manager, gaining insights into the tea production process.

The central attraction, Mirik Lake, also known as Sumendu Lake, spans approximately 1.25 kilometers in length. It is surrounded by chestnut, oak, and maple trees, creating a serene and picturesque environment. Boating and horse riding are popular activities here, allowing visitors to soak in the tranquil atmosphere. The lake, situated at the lowest altitude in Mirik, offers stunning views of the northern mountains and, on clear days, glimpses of the snow-capped Kanchenjunga peaks. The 80-foot-long arch footbridge across the lake enhances its charm, connecting the eastern and western banks.
Another must-visit spot is the Tingling View Point, which provides stunning vistas of the snow-capped hills that guard Darjeeling and Mirik. The sprawling tea plantations below form a striking contrast with the white snow and blue sky, offering perfect photo opportunities for visitors.
Mirik, with its blend of natural beauty, pleasant climate, and a variety of attractions, is a destination that promises a memorable and rejuvenating experience for all who visit.
