Unveiling the dark side of social media

Social media, an essential aspect of contemporary life, has evolved into both a facilitator of existence and a potential destructor. While the internet has undoubtedly provided unparalleled features and benefits, it also harbours overlooked drawbacks. Indeed, social media is a realm where moral distinctions are often blurred. Platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and X (formerly known as Twitter) dominate the internet landscape, driven by creators who craft content for their audiences. Additionally, platforms like “X” serve as conduits for sharing public opinions on various subjects.

Beyond platform mechanics, content is of paramount importance. Vigilance is crucial in selecting the videos and photos one engages with, given their profound impact on the human psyche and individual psychology. For example, children may adopt internet personalities as role models and imitate their actions or behaviours—a phenomenon known as modeling in psychological terms. The effects of such mimicry can be constructive or detrimental, depending on the role model followed.

Besides modeling, envy often arises when observing the opulent lifestyles of idols. Rather than eliciting inspiration, envy can evoke negative emotions, potentially leading to societal harm. Research has correlated instances of murder or theft with the emulation of scenes from movies or series. Caution is therefore paramount to avoid falling into harmful patterns. Additionally, as instances of online scams escalate, safeguarding oneself and loved ones from such dangers is imperative.

Some of these strategies can help individuals manage their internet usage:

· Tracking screen time to curb unnecessary scrolling.

· Allocating 10 minutes for self-introspection.

· Engaging in outdoor activities.

· Disconnecting from the online world and appreciating nature.

Undoubtedly, self-introspection remains pivotal in extricating oneself from any negative impact. No one knows an individual better than they know themselves. While the internet offers an avenue for introverts to form friendships without leaving their comfort zone, this seemingly innocuous engagement can foster feelings of insecurity and diminished
self-esteem. In the long term, this can lead to despondency and even harmful ideation.

Consciousness of online consumption is vital, as algorithms often feed similar content to users. Watching only constructive and beneficial content can help mitigate these effects.

In conclusion, social media presents both opportunities and perils. Vigilance in content selection and mindful engagement are paramount. As individuals navigate the digital landscape, cultivating self-awareness and consuming enriching content can ensure a positive online experience.
