In a turn of events, the fate of the National Eligibility and Entrance Examination for Master in Dental Surgery (NEET MDS) 2024 hangs in the balance, with an indication of a potential postponement. The exams, originally scheduled for March 18, 2024 are now under scrutiny following a revealing response to a Right to Information (RTI) request by the All India Student Union (AISU).
The AISU took to social media to share the information, stating, on February 8, ‘we filed an RTI to seek information about the NEET MDS exam postponement. Today, the response has been received stating that the representations are ‘Under Process’ in the Ministry.’ This has raised concerns among aspiring candidates as the official website of the National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) remains silent on any official announcement regarding the potential shift in the exam schedule.
As of the latest update, the NBEMS website maintains the original exam date of March 18 for NEET MDS, along with the internship cut-off date of March 31.
The lack of an official statement adds to the uncertainty surrounding the exam, leaving candidates in a state of limbo.
Adding to the complexity of the situation, a petition seeking to postpone NEET-MDS 2024 was filed in the Supreme Court. On February 21, the Supreme Court urged the Centre to expeditiously decide on the representation regarding the NEET MDS 2024 exam date.
Acknowledging the difficulty in extending cut-off dates, the court emphasized that the matter of fixing the cut-off date falls within the policy domain, suggesting that the government should take the lead in resolving the issue. The Centre was given a week to decide on the representation.
Amid this uncertainty, the National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) made a separate announcement regarding the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Postgraduate (NEET PG) exams in 2024. The NEET PG exams, initially slated for March 3, have been rescheduled to July 7.
As candidates eagerly await clarity on the NEET MDS 2024 exam, the lack of an official announcement and the ongoing legal proceedings have created a sense of unease in the medical aspirant community.
The NBEMS is urged to provide timely and transparent updates to alleviate the concerns of candidates preparing for these crucial entrance exams. The coming days will likely determine the fate of NEET MDS 2024, and aspirants remain hopeful for a swift resolution to the current uncertainties.
