UGC issues guidelines for translation of study materials using AI

According to newly issued guidelines by the University Grants Commission (UGC), higher education institutes in India are now permitted to utilise Artificial Intelligence (AI) to translate study materials of various subjects into Indian languages. This significant step aligns with the objectives outlined in the National Education Policy, allowing courses to be offered in regional languages.

The UGC has introduced these guidelines for the first time to ensure a structured approach for universities in implementing courses in Indian languages. To facilitate the translation process, educational institutes can make use of ‘ANUVADINI,’ an AI-based translation tool created by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). This tool offers several advantages, including translation in the same format as the source text file and the ability to perform speech-to-text typing.

Moreover, the guidelines highlight that the tool provides editing facilities, enabling users to make necessary adjustments during the translation process. The suggested workflow involves using the AI-based tool for the initial round of translation, followed by manual editing as needed. This combined approach is intended to enhance the accuracy and quality of translated study materials in Indian languages.
