UGC introduces flexible degree timelines for UG students

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has unveiled new regulations offering undergraduate students the flexibility to complete their degrees faster or slower than the standard duration. Announced by UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar, the initiative is a part of the Compendium of UGC Regulations. It aims to foster a student-centric approach in line with global trends in higher education.

The framework introduces two pathways: The Accelerated Degree Programme (ADP) and the Extended Degree Programme (EDP). Under the ADP, high-performing students or those earning additional credits can graduate ahead of schedule.

Conversely, the EDP allows students facing personal, financial, or academic challenges to extend their studies without penalties. Importantly, degrees completed through either pathway will hold the same validity and recognition as those completed within the standard duration.

Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the initiative supports learner-centric education and skill development. It also enables students to balance interdisciplinary studies, professional courses, or personal commitments alongside their education.

Institutes will have the autonomy to implement these options based on their resources. The flexibility offered under this framework is expected to cater to diverse learner needs, making higher education more accessible and modernised.

The UGC’s move is seen as a progressive step toward transforming higher education, fostering an environment that values adaptability and student empowerment. Institutes are anticipated to implement these changes soon, enabling students to tailor their academic journeys to align with individual goals and circumstances.
