A 1999 alumnus of Apeejay School, Faridabad, Ankur currently works with IBM India and has previously led testing teams in the UK. In this exclusive conversation, he outlines the future of testing, what students must learn, and how to stand out.
What does the role of a Test Architect actually involve today?
It’s no longer just about finding bugs. A Test Architect must understand development, automation, user experience, and now even AI. For instance, in one project, we used IBM’s AI tools to interpret legacy code, helping us understand systems written years ago. That saved time and ensured accuracy.
What qualities do you look for when hiring fresh talent?
Domain knowledge is important – especially in sectors like banking. But more than that, I value someone who questions systems, someone who’s curious enough to break what “looks perfect.” You also need to decode what a client wants and translate it into a workable solution.
What educational background do students need?
Most professionals come from a BTech, MTech, or MCA background. Beyond degrees, certifications make all the difference. Tools like Confluence, Jira, and Zephyr are essentials in most organisations now. These show your ability to manage tasks and collaborate effectively.
How is AI impacting the future of software testing?
AI is transforming testing. It helps us understand old codebases faster, automate repetitive tasks, and even predict risks. It’s not replacing testers – it’s empowering them.
