It’s been over two decades since she passed out of Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg. Since then, her biggest takeaway from school has become her quest towards a humanitarian mission. Meet Dr Radhika Dhawan Khanna, an established critical care specialist. In a candid interview, she takes us on a nostalgic ride.

What are you doing professionally now?

I am a doctor specialising in critical care. I completed my MBBS from Government Medical College, Amritsar, followed by an MD in Anaesthesia from Government Medical College, Patiala. I further pursued IDCCM (Critical Care) from Fortis Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre, New Delhi. At present, I am serving as a Senior Consultant Intensivist at Shriaman Super Speciality Hospital, Jalandhar.

What are the recent trends in the medical field?

Unlike other fields, medicine is an ever-evolving field. There is continuous research on medications and diseases. If you are a doctor, your education continues throughout your life to keep up with the new evolutions in disease and medicine. Artificial Intelligence has also stepped into the Medical field in recent times and is the new and upcoming trend.

Any advice for medical aspirants?

If you aspire to become a doctor, remember that hard work is the key to success. Focus on “studying smart”— this means managing your time wisely and following a well-planned study schedule. Avoid comparing yourself to others, and maintain consistency in your efforts. Include regular breaks and ensure you get enough sleep to keep your brain functioning optimally. Most importantly, build strong foundational concepts and avoid rote learning as much as possible.

How has Apeejay School changed over the last two decades?

While upholding its strong educational values and instilling cultural ethics in students, Apeejay School has made remarkable progress over the past 20 years. Embracing modern methods of teaching, the school has integrated Artificial Intelligence and Robotics into the curriculum, and computer education begins at the primary level. Apeejay School has successfully adapted to evolving educational standards without placing additional pressure on students or parents.

Share your favourite nostalgia from school.

I cherish all my school memories — from the morning assembly to the final bell at the end of the day. Going to school was a joy, and I never felt like taking a day off. Today, my kids feel the same way about school. I especially loved the house shows, held twice a year — once for students and once for parents. Events like flower arrangement competitions, house quizzes, and debates were part of our routine, and we participated in all of them with great enthusiasm. One memory that stands out is the Leadership Camp at Apeejay School, Noida, where selected students from Apeejay Schools across India came together. It was an incredible experience that taught me so much and left a lasting impact.

How were the teachers during that time?

Teachers at Apeejay School have consistently stood out for their dedication, always encouraging and bringing out the best in their students. The foundation laid during those school years continues to support me in every stage of life. It’s a heart-warming experience to see my children now studying at my alma mater, sometimes even under the guidance of the same teachers who once taught me. I can say with complete sincerity that wherever I am today is because of the world-class educators who shaped my journey at Apeejay School.

Any message for school students you’d like to share?

To all school students, I’d like to say — school is truly the best time of your life. The foundation for your future success is built during these years. It’s where you form lifelong friendships and learn values that shape your character. Make the most of this time: study hard, respect your elders, learn with sincerity, and don’t forget to enjoy every moment. There’s truly no time like your school days.
