On July 27, 2024, Apeejay School, Noida, put up a fabulous exhibition of mathematical genius in the Dr Stya Paul Memorial Mathematics Quest 2024 that was organised at Apeejay School, Saket. It saw participation by young mathematicians who engaged in a competition meant for schools that participated, rolling out their expertise in a myriad of activities in Math.

Many other innovative categories were there, including the ‘Mathematica Wall Wonders’, in which creativity and geometry combined. One bright student among these was class IV, Saavi Jain, who fashioned a beautiful wall hanging with mathematical shapes. This exceptional skill and creativity won her the first prize in setting a high bar for the day’s events.

Another high spot was the ‘Maths and Gond Art’ competition, wherein Tanvi Rajput of class VII merged the traditional folk art form of Gonds with mathematical concepts in an artistic way. This amalgamation of unusual skills fetched her not only the first prize for the event but also brought to the fore a talented artist.

Extempore Excellence

The ‘Mathematics Extempore’ had the participants think on their feet, and Priyam Aggarwal of class XII won the second prize. He could express complex mathematical ideas extempore — so much for the level of understanding and enthusiasm among the pupils.

As part of the on-site events, the Online Inter-school Olympiad 2024 assumes the significance of being an integral part of the quest. The e-challenge provided a much wider participation base since the students could participate from anywhere. Akshita Soni of class X won the second prize in Level 1: Classes IX–X, and Shreyashi Pandey of class XI got the third prize in Level 2: Classes XI-XII. Like all the earlier versions, this online version also carried on the rich tradition of encouraging analytical thinking and creating an atmosphere for competition-cum-cooperation.

These individual achievements culminated in the Overall Winners trophy for Apeejay School, Noida. This was a recognition of the collective effort and exceptional skill shown by its students across all events.

The Dr Stya Paul Memorial Maths Quest 2024 has long been hailed as an event rejoicing in children’s performances and, at the same time, showing interest in mathematics for developing skills related to critical thinking and solving problems among students. It presented a very useful platform whereby young minds could test themselves and come up with improvements — thereby endeavouring a bright future for mathematicians in the next generation.

This competition turned out not to be one at all but a celebration of the mathematical spirit, driving home the fact that mathematics is all about creative and innovative thinking.
