Apeejay Institute of Design (AID), New Delhi recently organised an interactive and highly engaging Paper Draping Workshop for the students of Pahal Academy, offering them an experiential introduction to the fundamentals of design thinking, garment construction, and visual communication. The workshop served as an enriching platform for young learners to explore creativity through hands-on experimentation and material manipulation.
The primary objective of the workshop was to help students understand the key design principles of form, structure, balance, and aesthetics—an essential foundation for anyone aspiring to enter the world of fashion or design. By using newspaper as the core material, participants were encouraged to look beyond conventional fabrics and view everyday objects as tools for innovation. This sustainable and inventive approach not only challenged their imagination but also helped them develop problem-solving skills in real time.
Under the guidance and mentorship of experienced faculty members from Apeejay Institute of Design, students began the session by brainstorming design concepts and studying various forms and silhouettes. Faculty experts demonstrated techniques of folding, pleating, layering, and shaping paper, helping participants understand how a flat surface can be transformed into a structured, wearable form.
Working collaboratively in teams, students moved from ideation to execution—designing and constructing creative paper garments that reflected their artistic perspective. The activity allowed students to sharpen their communication and teamwork abilities while fostering a spirit of experimentation and confidence.
As the workshop progressed, the room buzzed with energy, ideas, and enthusiasm. Students tested multiple approaches, refined their techniques, and pushed the boundaries of their imagination. What began as sheets of newspaper gradually evolved into beautifully draped forms, ranging from structured bodices and sculpted sleeves to dramatic silhouettes and avant-garde shapes.
The workshop concluded with a vibrant display and informal showcase where each group presented their final paper draped creations. The display highlighted the originality, curiosity, and design sensibility of the students. Faculty members appreciated the participants for their dedication and encouraged them to continue refining their creative expression and technical understanding.
The Paper Draping Workshop proved to be a valuable learning experience for the Pahal Academy students, helping them gain exposure to the design process in a fun, hands-on format. By merging creativity with practical skill-building, the initiative reinforced Apeejay Institute of Design’s commitment to nurturing future designers and inspiring young talent to think differently.
