Ashmit Nagpal, a class 12 student at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg in Jalandhar, is a brilliant artist. You can very well see it as he presents a portrait to the Honourable Vidhan Sabha Speaker of Haryana Shri Gian Chand Gupta himself.
In this week’s Aspiring Artist interview, he speaks about the detailing he focuses on every sketch, which makes the process 10 hours long at times. He also speaks of his idea of becoming an art-entrepreneur.
Read edited excerpts:
When did your artistic journey begin?
I started drawing when I was in class 9; it was during lockdown to be precise. I used to draw anime sketches initially, but then I saw a video of an artist explaining that we should not only draw anime sketches because the features of the characters in it don’t often have perfect shape and symmetry. Their features like the eyes, nose, lips often bend from any point unlike human sketches. Hence, I started focusing more on human sketches.
Which art form do you like the most?
Silhouette sketches! This form of art gives a perfect look to the portrait of absolutely anything. One has to first draw the outlines of the shadows and then make the outlines of the bright areas. Then one fills the shadow areas with a black brush pen and the bright areas with light grey colour.
How does your school support you as an artist?
My art teacher always motivates me to work hard and become perfect in making sketches and paintings. My teacher Mr Pawan Kumar is my guru and I am this far solely due to his teachings.
How would you define art?
Art is the expression of ideas and hidden talent within a person through a physical medium.
How much time does it take you to complete an artwork? What are your common ideas and themes?
A sketch is done within 7-8 hours without break. If it requires more details then it may take up to 10 hours.
A starting point for all beginners?
I would say start with sunset paintings; it is easy and fun! It looks very beautiful as well.
Any upcoming works?
I want to draw the portrait of the Governor and Chief Minister of Haryana. Also, I am planning to draw a portrait of our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
A new artform you wish to learn?
Watercolour painting, I want to practice it and be perfect at it.
Apart from art, any other hobbies?
Skating, yoga, self defence training, I am doing a course on digital marketing as well. I have a business idea. I want to make oversized t-shirts and hoodies with aesthetic print designs on the back. I then intend to put them for sale online. I want to run my page on Instagram and make it look good. Hopefully this course will help me.
