Children are like sponges. They try to make sense of the world through constant information that is available around them. Moreover, their ability to listen, be patient, show kindness and empathy simply depends upon how their parents and educators train them in their foundational years.
So, if early childhood education can inculcate some basic skills, surely it will reap gold to make children become seasoned professionals later in life. Ms Ritu Kanwar, the Headmistress at Apeejay School, Faridabad, is passionate about teaching soft skills to primary learners. The result? She says, “It is magical! Children become more confident and responsible.” Read on, edited excerpts from the interview.
What are soft skills?
Soft skills are the non-cognitive skills which people use when they communicate with one another. They are a by-product of a healthy brain structure that can establish effective dialogue and enhance existing talents of an individual. Many of these soft skills can be developed during foundational learning, basically formulated from small activities such as public-speaking, on-stage performances, group-based projects, etc. Simply explained, the first 1000 days of a child’s life play a crucial role in their future. Therefore, it is important for children to acquire these skills early on.
Can soft skills be taught at a pre-school level?
Absolutely. Children are open to learning at that time and it has life-long benefits. Communication, teamwork, problem-solving, time management, critical thinking, decision-making, adaptability, leadership, are some things that are learnt only in school. Moreover, with their peers, children learn to share and also develop a sense of belonging.
At Apeejay, what activities equip primary learners for future challenges?
In the school, students actively participate in performing and visual arts activities such as role-plays, on-stage performances, oration, show and tell, fancy dress, just to mention a few. Projection of ideas through art, music and dance is highly encouraged at Apeejay. Students are inspired to try their hands on culinary arts too! In addition to this, sportsmanship and team-based activities are a regular feature in the school. We also conduct consistent workshops for our young learners to make them understand their environment in an effective manner. I am proud to say that one can tell an Apeejayite in a crowd because of the way they conduct themselves and showcase moral values imparted in all our schools.
Do soft skills help children develop good bonds?
Undoubtedly, sharing and caring is the first lesson that is taught to them. Respecting each other, collaborating, maintaining healthy competition, learning together and reflecting upon their actions helps them form actual relationships.
What can parents do to build soft skills among children?
They must mould them towards positive behaviours. If you shun a child or reprimand him/her without citing a reason, that behaviour is likely to never change. So, my suggestion is try to teach them self-control, acknowledge their presence, avoid speaking disrespectfully, and talk to them about their feelings.
Accept them and give them a chance to share what goes on in their tiny mind!
