Social networking has taken today’s youth by the storm. Teenagers are going bananas over it and spending most of their time socialising on these sites. At the same time, it has given rise to concerns among parents about the potential negative consequences, such cybercrimes, online predators, and other dangers.
If we talk about the pros and cons of social networking, it becomes evident that there are two sides of this phenomenon. Let’s begin by discussing the positive aspects. Social networking sites spread information faster than any other media, making them valuable resources of news. These platforms contribute to spreading social awareness and can even aid in solving crimes swiftly.

Additionally, these sites help students do better at school by facilitating discussions about educational trips, assignments and various academic topics. Thus, they can score better. Social networking also expands one’s circle of friends, enabling individuals to connect with family, relatives, and friends living abroad through Skype and email facilities. It fosters the maintenance of relationships with friends who cannot be met regularly.
Now, let’s turn our attention to the cons. Social networks tend to spread false and unreliable information which may harm groups, communities and even nations. Students waste their time by playing games on it. Therefore, they tend to score lower grades in academics, which leads to stress, misunderstanding and arguments. Children spend less time in face-to-face interactions and this leads to self-centered personalities and behaviours. A person may suffer from loneliness, depression, anxiety and general distress too.
In conclusion, it is wise to approach social networking sites with care and awareness of its advantages and disadvantages.
