Junkyard Genius are vital in nurturing holistic development in students. They encourage innovation, critical thinking, and sustainability awareness from a young age. Such activities align with the NEP 2020 and SDGs, empowering learners to apply knowledge in real-world contexts while promoting confidence, creativity, and teamwork.

In an inspiring celebration of creativity and innovation, the students of Class V of Apeejay School, Noida, participated in the much-anticipated intraclass competition, Junkyard Genius. The event was designed to combine mathematical concepts with creative problem-solving, fostering a spirit of innovation, sustainability, and effective communication among young learners.
The competition aimed to promote the intelligent reuse of materials — junk items transformed into mathematical toys, models, or games— encouraging a hands-on approach to learning. It reflected the core objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Students were shortlisted through a selection round conducted on April 16, 2025. In the final round, participants were given 45 minutes to create a math-based model using discarded materials, followed by a two-minute presentation explaining the mathematical relevance of their creation.
The event turned classrooms into buzzing innovation zones, where imagination met logic. Students showcased brilliant ideas—like geometry-inspired puzzles, measurement-based games, and models demonstrating symmetry and fractions. The experience significantly enhanced their fine motor skills, focus, and understanding of real-life mathematical applications.
Dr. Neha Sharma, Principal of the school, graced the occasion and praised the students’ enthusiasm, originality, and the environmental consciousness reflected in their work. She emphasised the importance of such platforms in building confident and capable individuals.

Winners of the Competition: First Position: Saavi Jain (V C) and Ira Negi (V D); Second Position: Nivriti Khemani (V A)
Best in Class Awards: V A: Devansh; V B: Aanya Srivastava; V C: Bhavya Sharma; and V D: Reyansh Mehra
The event was a resounding success, leaving students enriched with practical knowledge and a newfound appreciation for the beauty of mathematics.
