Her journey at Apeejay School, Kharghar, began in Class XI. Transitioning after spending years with the same set of friends and teachers was initially difficult, but the homely environment at this school made her feel welcome. “I was a Science student with Physics, Chemistry, Math, and Biology. What stayed with me was the environment created by teachers and peers; it shaped my personality and gave me the confidence to explore new paths,” Samraggi Debroy said, who, at present, is pursuing an MA in Society and Culture from IIT Gandhinagar.

In a candid interview, the alumna, who completed her BA LLB, practised law for a year, reflects on the mentors who shaped her journey.

Did the school ethos ‘Soaring High is My Nature’ influence you?

In hindsight, yes. My career choices have been unconventional; moving from Science to Law and now Society and Culture. What the school instilled in me was the ability to face challenges head-on. I always felt I had a support system to fall back on, which built trust and resilience.

Were there any mentors who left a strong impression?

My Mathematics teacher was the first teacher I developed a friendly relationship with. She was both a teacher and a friend. My English teacher and the then Vice-principal created an inclusive classroom where even reserved students blossomed into confident individuals.

What challenges did you face while studying law?

Law is reading-intensive and demands long-term commitment; it’s a five-year course. Starting at 17-18 and finishing in your early 20s, you spend formative years immersed in it. Without passion, it can be overwhelming, but if you are genuinely interested, the journey becomes rewarding.

What motivated you to pursue a Master’s in Society and Culture?

I’ve long been interested in photography and the visual arts. After working in law, I wanted to explore art and aesthetics more deeply. I still feel I am in the learning phase, and this programme allows me to broaden my perspective.

How did co-scholastic activities shape you?

Many activities were team-based, and disagreements were natural. But the focus was always on finding solutions, not lingering on problems. This taught me problem-solving, inclusivity, and the value of collaboration — skills I continue to use.
