He was one of India’s greatest thinkers; was not only a scholar of immense intellect but also a leader who bridged the East and West through his deep understanding of philosophy and culture. Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s contributions to the fields of education, philosophy, and governance are unmatched, and his life continues to inspire generations.

As we celebrate Teacher’s Day on September 5, let’s explore the remarkable journey of this towering figure and the enduring impact he left on India and the world.

The making of a scholar
Born in 1888 in a small village in Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan’s early life was steeped in academic rigour. He was an exceptional student, earning scholarships that allowed him to pursue higher education.

Initially desiring to study Math, he studied Philosophy by chance; a cousin who graduated from the same college passed on his Philosophy textbooks to the younger brother – a step that would take Radhakrishnan to his destiny.

Dr Radhakrishnan’s academic achievements were remarkable — he became one of the most distinguished scholars of Indian philosophy, focusing on the study of Vedanta. His writings on Hindu philosophy, particularly his interpretations of Advaita Vedanta, placed him at the forefront of the global philosophical community. He was deeply influenced by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, and he saw Vedanta as a philosophy that could unite humanity.

He served as a professor at several prestigious institutes, including the University of Calcutta and the University of Oxford, where he held the prestigious Spalding Chair of Eastern Religion and Ethics. His tenure as a scholar and teacher was not limited to India; he also lectured extensively in Europe and the US, acting as a bridge between eastern and western thought.

One of his key beliefs was that India’s rich spiritual heritage, especially the philosophies of Tagore, best represented Indian culture. His lectures were delivered with such clarity and depth that he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature several times.

A Philosopher-statesman
Dr Radhakrishnan’s career took a turn when he entered public service. He was appointed as India’s first Vice-president and later became the second President of India, serving from 1962 to 1967. His diplomatic skills were recognised when he was appointed as India’s ambassador to the former USSR during a critical period in Indo-Soviet relations. It was during this time that he met the US President John F Kennedy, enhancing India’s position on the global stage.

Despite his achievements in governance, Dr Radhakrishnan never lost his passion for teaching and philosophy. When his students sought to celebrate his birthday after he became President, he humbly requested that instead of honouring him personally, the day should be observed as Teacher’s Day. His belief in the power of education is reflected in: ‘Teachers should be the best minds in the country.

A Life of Simplicity and Integrity
Despite being knighted by the British in 1931, Dr Radhakrishnan stopped using the title ‘Sir’ after India gained independence. His humility and integrity were legendary, and he remained a lifelong advocate of simplicity and service to the nation.

The Lasting Impact of a Teacher’s Wisdom
Dr Radhakrishnan’s literary contributions include numerous books and essays, most notably Indian Philosophy and The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore. His works have inspired countless students, scholars, and political leaders, emphasising the spiritual depth and wisdom inherent in Indian philosophy.

As we honour him each year on Teacher’s Day, we are reminded that Dr Radhakrishnan’s life – a life committed to knowledge, integrity, and the uplifting of the human spirit!
