In today’s fast-paced digital world, Public Relations (PR) is no longer just about press releases and media coverage. At its core, PR is about storytelling: real, meaningful, and authentic storytelling. For school and college students aspiring to build careers in communication, media, marketing, or branding, understanding the impact of authentic storytelling is essential.

Authentic storytelling in PR means sharing honest narratives that reflect real experiences, values, and emotions. Audiences today are aware and discerning; they can easily identify exaggerated or artificial messaging. Authentic stories build trust, credibility, and emotional connection. Whether it is a school highlighting student achievements, a college promoting its culture, or a brand communicating its purpose, genuine stories resonate far more deeply than polished but empty claims.

For students, storytelling skills begin early. Writing essays, delivering presentations, participating in debates, or creating digital content all contribute to shaping narrative abilities. Schools and colleges that encourage storytelling through projects, events, and student-led initiatives help learners express ideas clearly and confidently. These skills are directly transferable to PR and related fields.

“From a career perspective, authentic storytelling opens doors to diverse opportunities. Careers in PR, corporate communications, journalism, content creation, social media management, and brand strategy all rely heavily on storytelling. Professionals in these fields must craft narratives that align with organisational values while remaining truthful and relatable. Employers increasingly look for candidates who can communicate with clarity, empathy, and originality,” Anil Nagwani, an alumnus from Apeejay School of Management (ASM), shares.

“Moreover, authentic storytelling empowers students to build their own personal brands. In an era of LinkedIn profiles, digital portfolios, and social media presence, students who can tell their stories about achievements, challenges, and aspirations stand out. This ability enhances internship prospects, job interviews, and professional networking,” he added.

Authentic storytelling also fosters ethical communication. It teaches future PR professionals the responsibility that comes with shaping public perception. Honest storytelling promotes transparency and long-term reputation building rather than short-term visibility.
