Speed is fascinating! Whether it’s animals chasing their prey, vehicles racing on tracks, or powerful natural forces like wind and water, speed plays a crucial role in survival, science, and technology. From the fastest land animal to the speed of light, some things move so quickly that they break world records!
Have you ever wondered how fast the fastest bird can fly? Or how quickly a train can travel? What about the fastest thing in the universe? Let’s explore some of the speed champions of our world and beyond!
Fastest Animal on Land – The Cheetah
The cheetah holds the record for the fastest land animal, reaching speeds of up to 120 km/h (75 mph) in short bursts. It can go from 0 to 96 km/h (60 mph) in just 3 seconds, faster than most sports cars!

Fastest Bird – The Peregrine Falcon
When hunting, the peregrine falcon dives from the sky at speeds of over 380 km/h (240 mph). That makes it the fastest bird and the fastest living creature on the planet!
Fastest Marine Animal – The Sailfish
The sailfish, with its long, sharp bill, is the fastest swimmer. It can reach speeds of 110 km/h (68 mph) in the ocean, making it the speed champion of the sea.
Fastest Car – The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+
The fastest car in the world can reach a top speed of 490 km/h (304 mph)! However, normal roads aren’t safe for such speeds, so these records are set in controlled environments.
Fastest Train – The Maglev Train
The fastest train, the Shanghai Maglev, can travel at 460 km/h (286 mph), using powerful magnets to glide above the tracks!

Fastest Wind – Tornadoes
Some tornadoes have wind speeds of over 480 km/h (300 mph), making them one of nature’s fastest and most powerful forces.
Fastest Thing Ever – Light!
The fastest thing in the universe is light, traveling at 299,792 km/s (186,282 miles per second)! Nothing in the universe moves faster than light.
‘Speed is a motion, it’s a marvel of science, engineering, and nature. From the lightning-fast dive of a Peregrine Falcon to the unmatched speed of light, the race to be the fastest captures our imagination. Every record tells us more about evolution and how speed means survival not only for animals but for science and engineering too. Every record broken shows our strive to be the fastest and helps us push a little more to our final goal’ shares Aahana Mathur, student of Apeejay’s IB School, Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park.
From cheetahs to space rockets, speed is everywhere! What do you think will break the next speed record?
