The Interact Club of this school launches a mission to combat hunger

The food drive at Apeejay Saket was a reminder that even a small contribution can make a huge difference

The Interact Club of Apeejay School, Saket, on November 9, 2024, took an inspiring step toward building a culture of empathy and social responsibility in its students. The club created an outreach programme: Donate One Potato Onion Each (DOPOE). The aim was to encourage students, from nursery to class XII, to donate food items – in particular, potatoes and onions. These consumables were collected and sent to the Institute for the Blind in Malviya Nagar.

The programme was not all about collecting food items; it was a learning platform wherein the students learnt the value of sharing with society. DOPOE had a dual purpose. First, to give it directly to the needy. Second, to create and inspire responsibility and empathy in each young participant.

Over the two weeks leading up to and following Diwali, students contributed not only potatoes and onions but also other essential food items. This collective effort underscored how even modest contributions, when pooled together, can have a meaningful impact.

Inspiring Values of Compassion and Responsibility

With the Sustainable Development Goal of zero hunger, adopted by World leaders in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda, in mind, the Apeejay School Saket’s Interact Club aligns itself towards eradicating hunger and malnutrition. The DOPOE programme works to try to meet the needs of the community in a practical and hands-on approach.

A lesson learnt here is that helping others who are less privileged not only benefits them but also a healthier, more equitable society – a message that will see the students into their journey of becoming future leaders.

According to the Principal of Apeejay School, Saket, Dr Sujeet Eric Masih, such initiatives are vital not only for community support but also for instilling values of compassion and empathy in young minds.

“Apeejay School Saket exemplifies the power of values and ethics. Keep inspiring change with your commitment to service! Kudos to the team of the Interact Club for the dedication to values and ethics set as a remarkable example for all,” Dr Masih said.

By participating in DOPOE, students learnt that their actions, however small, have the power to make a real difference in someone else’s life.

A Drop in the Ocean, Yet Essential

The DOPOE food drive at Apeejay Saket was a beautiful reminder that while we may only make a small difference, each contribution matters. The school recognises that this initiative may be just “a drop in the ocean,” but believes firmly that the absence of this drop would leave a void.

By engaging students in meaningful acts of service, Apeejay Saket is building a foundation of compassion, humility, and social responsibility that will shape them as conscientious citizens.
