According to Ms Pratibha, Dance Facilitator at Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park, integrating Kathak into the IB curriculum involves aligning its traditional elements like storytelling, rhythm, and expression with the IB’s focus on inquiry-based learning and global contexts.
She explained that lessons are designed to explore Kathak not only as a dance form but also as a medium for interdisciplinary learning, incorporating History, Mathematics (through rhythmic patterns), and Cultural Studies. By encouraging students to analyse and create performances, we balance tradition with creativity, making the art form relevant to contemporary educational goals.

“Through Kathak, students develop artistic skills like rhythm, coordination, and expression, as well as life skills such as discipline, teamwork, and cultural sensitivity. They enhance their ability to think critically, present confidently, and express emotions through movement. The storytelling aspect of this dance style improves communication skills, while the rigorous practice fosters perseverance and time management,” the educator said.
To ensure that students appreciate and preserve the cultural heritage of Kathak while adapting to a global learning environment, they are introduced to the history, philosophy, and cultural significance of this dance through interactive lessons and projects. Cross-cultural collaborations and performances highlight Kathak’s universal themes, connecting the students with global contexts. By linking its traditional aspects to modern narratives, we ensure students understand its value while making it relatable and meaningful in a global environment.
“To encourage creative interpretation in Kathak performances while maintaining their classical discipline, students are encouraged to experiment with themes, costumes, and props while adhering to the traditional structure of Kathak compositions. They are guided to create original choreography, combining classical movements with contemporary ideas, ensuring their creativity flourishes within the boundaries of Kathak’s grammar,” she shared.
To evaluate a student’s progress within the IB framework, especially given its focus on holistic development, the school uses a combination of formative and summative assessments, focusing on technical skills, creativity, understanding of theory, and reflective practice. The IB’s emphasis on holistic development is integrated by assessing students on their ability to connect Kathak with broader themes, demonstrate collaboration, and exhibit personal growth through performances and self-assessments.
Learning Kathak, the Facilitator said, enhances a student’s profile for admission to foreign universities, especially when applying for arts, cultural studies, or interdisciplinary programs. “It highlights a student’s dedication to mastering a classical art form, showcasing their cultural awareness and discipline. It adds depth to their profile by reflecting creativity, adaptability, and an appreciation for heritage. Kathak can also serve as a unique subject for college essays, portfolios, or interdisciplinary projects, emphasising their diverse skills and global outlook, which are highly valued by universities,” Ms Pratibha said in conclusion.
