The head of Microsoft AI has strongly refuted the idea that Artificial Intelligence (AI) could ever achieve consciousness, stating that only humans and other biological beings are capable of genuine emotion or experience. According to him, AI systems do not feel emotions like sadness or pain but merely simulate patterns that appear human-like.
As major technology companies such as OpenAI, Google, Meta, and xAI race toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), the industry needs to focus on developing AI tools that serve tangible human needs rather than attempting to replicate subjective experience. AI models are designed to assist humans and enhance productivity, not to become self-aware or emotional entities.
The growing intelligence of AI systems has been acknowledged, with recognition of their ability to outperform humans in several areas. However, there remains a clear distinction between computational intelligence and emotional consciousness, as the AI’s perception of feelings or experiences is merely an illusion created by advanced programming.
Microsoft’s approach to AI was highlighted, contrasting it with companies developing emotionally engaging AI companions. The company aims to create systems that work purely in the service of users. Features such as the new “real talk” Copilot are designed to make interactions more natural and useful without implying consciousness.
It was concluded that while AI continues to evolve at an extraordinary pace, its development should remain grounded in human values, focusing on enhancing life rather than imitating it.
