The Evolution of Learning: AI reshapes education

Gen AI transforms education by creating innovative content, enriching the learning experience

In an era defined by unprecedented technological advancements, the landscape of education is teetering on the brink of a remarkable transformation. Picture classrooms where educators harness the power of cutting-edge technology, guiding students not just through textbooks but enabling them to co-create their educational odyssey. At the intersection of education and technology lies artificial intelligence (AI), presenting boundless opportunities in a future that remains uncertain yet brimming with potential.

Over the recent months, Carl Hooker, host of Ed-Surge webinars, steered three enlightening sessions featuring panels of experts, delving into the profound impact of AI on education. Sponsored by Amazon Web Services (AWS), these webinars served as a forum for insights from education leaders, policymakers, and Ed-tech innovators. Three prevailing themes emerged from these sessions: The imperative to fully unlock AI’s potential, the necessity for judicious and responsible implementation, and the urgency to prepare ourselves and our students for an ambiguous yet promising future.

Charting the Course for AI Integration

AI integration involves infusing machine-driven intelligence into diverse applications and processes, enabling tasks that replicate human cognitive functions such as learning from data, problem-solving, and pattern recognition. Kevin McCandless, a senior solutions architect at AWS, underscores the significance of machine learning (ML), a core AI technique leveraging algorithms and historical data for predictions. McCandless introduces the concept of generative AI (gen AI), marking the next phase in AI and ML evolution. Gen AI possesses the remarkable ability to create entirely new educational content, playing a pivotal role in enriching the learning experience.

Unleashing the Potential of AI

Richard Culatta, CEO of ASCD and ISTE, outlines a compelling framework for AI integration in education. He identifies two crucial facets, the first emphasising the use of AI as a tool to augment learning through personalised education and support. The second dimension focuses on educating young individuals on leveraging AI for their future careers, leadership roles, and learning opportunities. Culatta astutely notes a disproportionate emphasis on the first facet in discussions, highlighting the equally vital second dimension.

Embracing AI in educational settings is the fundamental step in addressing both facets. Mary Strain, business development executive for AI and ML at AWS, notes a noticeable divergence in the acceptance of generative AI within the educational landscape, particularly between K-12 and higher education institutes, with some K-12 institutions even prohibiting gen AI. Strain emphasises the potential of AI-generated content to empower students, granting them control over their learning journey, fostering higher-order thinking skills, and introducing innovative educational challenges.

As school districts seek swift solutions, Culatta warns against futile attempts to block AI, as it rapidly becomes a ubiquitous presence. Educator and Ed-tech consultant Rachelle Dené Poth concurs, encouraging students to use AI-powered tools in the classroom while emphasizing the need to teach them that AI is a tool, not a replacement for critical thinking and creativity.

However, before students can fully embrace gen AI, educators themselves must embrace the technology. Culatta underscores the critical need for supporting educators in this moment, stressing that it is not enough to merely instruct them to learn about AI; there must be dedicated time and space provided for exploration. ISTE has made this a priority, offering professional development and resources, including a guide for school leaders and a teacher course, focused on learning about and effectively integrating AI into the educational landscape.
