The essence of value-based education in shaping tomorrow’s leaders

By Monalisa Singha Ray

The history of our country and culture are entirely based on the value system. Right from mythologies such as the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the Gita, and many more, we have glaring examples of our rich value system that we have inherited and carried on for thousands of years. The cultural value systems witnessed in various scriptures all over the places not only surprise us but also make us think about the deep and rich cultural sense of those days.

Rani Laxmi Bai, Subhash Chandra Bose, Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Mother Teresa, Chhatrapati Shivaji, etc., have raised themselves above and displayed what the value of education is. How could these great personalities achieve so much in just one life? The answer is value education. It had become the power of their life. They taught us how the value education of an individual can change the perception and paradigm of the whole world.

Value education means inculcating in children a deep sense of humanism, a deep concern for the well-being of others and oneself. Value education can show us the right path; it can lead us in the correct direction. The purpose of value education is to develop all the qualities mentioned above. Moreover, it is a process of increasing the overall character of a student; it also includes character development, personality development, and spiritual development. It develops a sensible person with strong character and values.

Value-based education is highly needed in our modern society because our lives have become more complex. In our school, we have the subject “life skills” to teach human values. However, it is not only in life skills that we learn human values. Every teacher teaches us some value or another. Value education not only means giving values; it also means accepting values. If a mentor gives a value to a child, but he/she does not accept it, then what is the use of that value?

The aim of value education should not only be that the student can earn his bread and butter, but to build characters like cooperation, honesty, gratitude, friendliness, politeness, kindness, etc. The real aim of value education should be to make the student a good human being. If one becomes a good human being, then he/she can achieve anything in the world.

Value education lays emphasis on the personality development of individuals to shape their future and tackle difficult situations with ease. If an individual is value educated, then he/she can build a good nation. He/she can help the nation be a socially responsible, culturally rich, and intellectually competitive nation.

We learn many values in our daily life. Even a page has a lot to teach us, and then imagine what books teach us. If books tell us so much, then can you think of how much life teaches us?
