Dr. Chouhan, can you tell us about your early days at Apeejay School and how they shaped your career?
My journey at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, began in my pre-school years. Both my parents are alumni of Apeejay, and that’s why they enrolled me in Apeejay for my schooling. Initially, I was deeply involved in sports, particularly basketball and cricket, with dreams of pursuing a career in athletics. However, my trajectory changed dramatically in 9th grade when I participated in the NASA Space Settlement Design Competition. This international competition, which involved creating a viable space settlement design, was a turning point. The experience of working with a team and the mentorship I received from teachers ignited my passion for science, ultimately steering me towards a career in medicine.

Winning the NASA Space Settlement Design Competition must have been a significant achievement. Can you share more about that experience?
Winning the NASA Space Settlement Design Competition was indeed a monumental achievement. In 9th grade, our team secured the second prize, and in 10th grade, we won the grand prize for our project, VONA. This competition required us to design a space settlement that could ensure human survival outside Earth. The project was an intense and rewarding experience, requiring dedication and innovative thinking. Standing in front of astronauts, including Dr. Buzz Aldrin, and presenting our project was surreal. This achievement was the third time an Indian school had won the grand prize, and it brought immense pride to Apeejay School and our country.

How did your time at Apeejay School influence your decision to pursue medicine?
The formative years at Apeejay School played a crucial role in shaping my career. The school’s emphasis on holistic development and time management helped me balance academics and extracurricular activities. My participation in the NASA competition and the supportive environment at Apeejay solidified my interest in science. Moreover, hearing stories from my family about their unfulfilled dreams of becoming doctors inspired me to pursue medicine. I wanted to carry forward the legacy and achieve what my maternal grandmother and father could not.

What were some of the challenges you faced during your preparation for medical entrance exams, and how did Apeejay School support you?
Preparing for medical entrance exams was challenging, especially balancing schoolwork and coaching. Apeejay School played a crucial role by providing a supportive environment and excellent faculty. The school didn’t allow dummy admissions, which meant I had to manage both school and coaching. This taught me time management and consistency. My teachers were always available, like 911, to clear my doubts and guide me, which was instrumental in my success.

Can you tell us about your journey through medical school and your achievements there?
After clearing my NEET UG examination with an All India rank of 793 and securing a spot in AIIMS with a rank of 1246, I chose to attend Dayanand Medical College in Ludhiana. My years in medical school were marked by rigorous study and significant achievements. I published five research papers and won the ICMR STS 2018 Research scholarship, granted by the Government of India. Additionally, I conducted and participated in multiple free medical health camps and organised several international and national seminars for students pursuing Masters in the USA after MBBS. These experiences enriched my understanding of medicine and strengthened my commitment to serving others.

How did your experiences at Apeejay School prepare you for the challenges in medical school and beyond?
Apeejay School instilled in me core values of time management, consistency, and perseverance. Balancing sports, academics, and the NASA competition taught me the importance of discipline and focus. The supportive teachers at Apeejay were always there to help with my doubts and encouraged me to strive for excellence. These skills were invaluable in medical school, where the workload and stress levels were high. The ability to manage time effectively and stay dedicated to my goals helped me navigate through the challenges.

What advice would you give to current students at Apeejay School who aspire to follow in your footsteps?
My advice to current students is to stay consistent, trust the process, and value the guidance of your teachers and parents. Don’t take your school teachers for granted; they play a crucial role in your education and overall development. Balance your time between academics and extracurricular activities, and don’t be afraid to seek advice from seniors and mentors. Finally, cherish your family and the support they provide, as their encouragement is fundamental to your success.

What are your future aspirations in the medical field?
I have recently cleared the USMLE and am preparing to join a college in the USA. I aim to specialise in either oncology or cardiology. My goal is to contribute significantly to these fields and continue the legacy of helping others, which has been a core value in my family.

How do you think Apeejay School has shaped you as a person and a professional?
Apeejay School has been instrumental in shaping me into the person I am today. The school’s emphasis on holistic development, time management, and consistency has been pivotal. The values instilled by the school, such as hard work, dedication, and the spirit of “soaring high,” have stayed with me and continue to inspire me in my professional journey.

What are some of the key lessons you have learnt throughout your academic journey that you would like to share with aspiring medical students?
One of the key lessons I’ve learnt is the importance of perseverance and resilience. The journey to becoming a doctor is long and often challenging, but staying focused on your goals and not giving up is crucial. Time management and consistency are essential; it’s important to develop a study routine and stick to it. Additionally, seeking help and guidance when needed, whether from teachers, mentors, or peers, can make a significant difference. Lastly, maintaining a balance between academics and personal well-being is vital. Taking time to relax and recharge is just as important as studying hard.
