As part of its ongoing Professional Development Program, Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, ensured its educators remained lifelong learners by participating in a specialised workshop on Biodiversity Education and Citizen Science. The session, organised by WWF India, was attended by Ms Anasua Dasgupta and Mr Pranjal Gupta, dedicated educators passionate about enhancing their teaching methodologies.

The workshop began with an interactive discussion, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas on incorporating biodiversity into everyday learning. The participants shared best practices and innovative teaching strategies aimed at integrating environmental consciousness into the classroom. This collaborative dialogue set a positive tone for the rest of the session.

Ms Anasua Dasgupta and Mr Pranjal Gupta expressed their enthusiasm, emphasising how such workshops broaden their perspective and enhance their ability to create engaging learning experiences. Workshops like these are eye-opening. They inspire us to teach with a deeper understanding of nature and sustainability.

Ms Dasgupta, TGT Geography, shared that the engaging workshop commenced with an interactive discussion at the auditorium, where educators exchanged ideas on incorporating biodiversity education into their teaching practices.

“During the outdoor activity, participants explored the local biodiversity, observing and recording their findings using the iNaturalist app. This hands-on experience allowed educators to connect with nature, fostering a deeper appreciation for the importance of conservation. The workshop provided valuable insights and practical approaches to integrating biodiversity education and citizen science into school curriculum.  Both of us returned with innovative ideas and enthusiasm to share our experiences with students and colleagues,” the educator said.

Mr Gupta, TGT Biology, said that the workshop was a wonderful opportunity as they were guided about various online tools like MYNA and iNaturalist. “The workshop was engaging and interactive and we were provided with amazing resources as take-away to integrate with our pedagogy. As an educator I strive to develop empathy and nature is perfect to get inspired by for collaboration, cooperation, altruism, and sustainability. The tools provided by the organizers are quite insightful and elaborate. The ideas shared in the workshop are something I am looking forward to implementing. Our students are torchbearers for the future and we need to ensure that they have the requisite skills and knowledge to combat challenges that will come.

Nature Walk at Lodhi Gardens

The workshop took an exciting turn with an outdoor activity at Lodhi Gardens, one of Delhi’s historic landmarks. Educators embarked on a guided nature walk, engaging in sensory-based activities designed to sharpen their observation skills. Surrounded by diverse flora and fauna, they explored the ecological richness of the garden.

Equipped with the iNaturalist app, participants recorded various plant and animal species they encountered. This hands-on experience helped them connect with nature on a deeper level while learning how to document biodiversity scientifically. The exercise highlighted the importance of citizen science and how data collected by individuals can support conservation efforts.
