The Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values was more than just a recognition for this student of Class X at Apeejay School, Noida. This is because she felt that there were more deserving students. Hence, when she was chosen, she was beyond happy. She has always believed that achievements don’t define us; who we are as individuals matters more.

In a candid interview, Ananya Bhagchandani, about how, beyond academics, she is deeply interested in music, enjoys reading and writing poetry and short stories, among other things.

What does receiving the Dr Stya Paul Award mean to you personally?

It means a lot because this award recognises who I am at heart, not just what I have achieved. It reminds me that even small acts of honesty and respect can make a big difference. I’ll do my best to live up to these values in the future.

An instance where you consciously chose to uphold human values, even when it wasn’t easy.

Once, some of my classmates were making fun of a person for choices that were simply different from theirs. It didn’t feel right to stay silent. I was scared of being judged for speaking up, but I couldn’t ignore it. I did speak, and for a few days, my friends teased me about it, but I don’t regret standing up for what was right.

How do human values influence your daily life?

I believe human values are the foundation of one’s personality. The decisions we make throughout life stem from what we’ve been taught since childhood. My values guide how I treat others, how I speak, and how I respond to situations. Whether it’s with my teachers, friends, or strangers, the impression people have of me reflects the values I live by. When you truly believe in something, it shows. So being genuine is imperative.

Who or what inspires you to live by human values like integrity, empathy, and respect?

Primarily, my parents. Since childhood, I’ve seen them handle every situation with humility and patience. Dr Stya Paul, sir, also inspires me greatly. I’ve read about his dedication to education and nation-building, and his humbleness truly touches me. I wish I could have heard his teachings in person; his stories and sayings continue to inspire me.

Message to juniors about living by human and moral values.

Right now, grades and achievements feel like everything. While they do matter, years from now, no one will remember our marks, but they’ll remember how we treated them. Therefore, it’s important to live with compassion and strong values. Success is temporary, but the way we touch others’ lives is permanent.

What lessons have you learned from your teachers about moral values?

My teachers have always been incredibly supportive. Some of them go out of their way to help students who struggle academically. From them, I’ve learnt the importance of believing in people, supporting them, and being someone others can rely on.
