Meet Vivaan Sethia, a student of Class VII at Apeejay School, Pitampura, who has recently been conferred with the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values 2025. Curious by nature, he believes strongly in honesty, kindness, and respect for others. He enjoys reading fiction and mythology and loves playing football. In a candid interview, he talks about how he aims to strengthen his self-control, think before acting, follow good habits, and continue growing in honesty, kindness, and patience while helping others whenever possible.

How did you feel when you first heard that you had received such a prestigious award?

I was filled with immense joy when I learnt that I had received this award. I felt truly happy and deeply thankful to God, my family, teachers, and friends. It is because of their blessings and the strong human values they have instilled in me that I was able to achieve this honour.

What do human values mean to you in school and in everyday life?

Human values in school mean showing kindness and respect to everyone. Students should avoid bullying or body shaming and treat juniors, classmates, and seniors equally. Respecting teachers, helping staff, and doing the right thing even when no one is watching are essential. Values like honesty, kindness, and helpfulness shape us into responsible and caring individuals.

Share a moment or experience that helped shape your understanding of values?

One experience that taught me kindness and empathy was watching my mother care for patients. Many times, she even forgets to eat while attending to others. Seeing this helped me realise the importance of being caring, responsible, and helpful to those in need.

Who is your biggest inspiration in practising good values, and why?

My inspirations include my family, friends, peers, and teachers, but my greatest inspiration is my grandfather. He is courageous at heart and always follows the path of honesty, kindness, compassion, and respect. He inspires me to help others selflessly—not for personal gain, but to spread goodness and earn blessings.

Is there any habit or action you follow daily that you believe makes a positive difference to others?

One small habit I follow daily is speaking politely and helping others whenever I can. I listen patiently, share my belongings, support classmates in need, and even crack jokes to make people smile. These simple actions spread kindness and help others feel respected and happy.

What role has your school played in helping you develop strong moral values and a sense of compassion?

Our school conducts assemblies and workshops that encourage us to help everyone, regardless of their status or situation. We learn important values such as honesty, kindness, and compassion. Under the guidance of our Principal, teachers and staff consistently follow these values, and by seeing them in action, I have learned to practise them in my daily life.

How do you balance academics, activities, and being mindful of others’ feelings?

I enjoy academics, especially Science, Math, and Sanskrit, as they help me gain knowledge. I also take part in activities like the choir. With effective time management, I balance my studies and activities while remaining honest, kind, and respectful, ensuring everyone feels valued.

What advice would you like to give to your peers about being respectful, honest, and caring in daily life?

My advice to my peers is to always be honest, respectful, and caring. We should put an end to all forms of bullying, verbal, physical, or mental. Treat everyone with kindness and respect, and never lie to family, friends, or teachers. Even small acts of honesty, patience, and helpfulness can create a positive and happy environment.
