Do you know that human values are not only applicable to personal life but also play a very important role in the professional world? Integrity and ethics at work are very crucial for establishing trust and reputation. Honesty, transparency, and ethical behaviour create credibility, foster good relationships with colleagues and clients, and contribute to a healthy working environment.

For the recipients of the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values, these are not ideals but a path towards an easier, more peaceful world to live in. Let us get to know one of the recipients (academic year 2024-25) — Diya Gusain, a class VII (now Class VIII) student at Apeejay School, Saket.

How were you feeling when you learnt that you had received the award?

I was really surprised and not expecting it, but I felt very proud of myself. My parents were very happy and proud of me. It was an exciting and great experience for all of us. This award will forever be special for the rest of my life. The award is a very big opportunity for me. I got this award because of my positive attitude and how I treat others.

How do you plan to carry forward the values associated with this award?

I plan to spread awareness and try my best to live by these values. I hope I can tell others the importance of imbibing human values in their lives and its advantages.

What is one aspect of Dr Stya Paul’s life that inspires you the most?

Our Founder-Chairman, Dr Stya Paul, was a very charitable man, and I admire how he always helped others through charity. One value I like is loyalty. For example, if someone shares a secret with me, I will do my best to stay loyal and keep it confidential.

In today’s selfish world, how do you ensure you remain honest, loyal, and disciplined?

My parents inspire and teach me a lot. They guide me and are my role models in practising these values. They have taught me compassion, love for others, and to support and help everyone.

Tell us about yourself.

At present, I am in class VII. While it is too early to decide what I want to pursue, I may end up taking PCB since I aspire to be a doctor. I also enjoy dancing, and I’m also good at sketching, though I’m not very much into art. I love to sketch when I have the time.

How has your school helped inculcate values in you?

My teachers at Apeejay School have been extremely supportive. Over the years, they have empowered me, given me confidence, and supported my passion.

What role have your friends played in shaping who you are?

My friends support me and help correct me when I make bad decisions.  For instance, once, during our school’s Annual Appreciation Day, I thought about carrying my phone, but my friends advised me against it, as it wasn’t allowed by the teacher. In the end, I realised what they said was correct and I may have misplaced it.
