She is, at present, in Class XI pursuing Commerce at Apeejay School, Nerul. She has a keen interest in Economics, finance, and enjoys music and reading. She was raised in a morally driven way by her parents, something that the school also nourished. Growing up, she looked up to her seniors, teachers, and parents who embodied the human values. Meet Yashashree Rana, who was conferred with the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values.
In a candid interview, she talks about how human values play in building a better school community.
Can you recall a situation where you demonstrated compassion or courage that made a difference to someone?
As a Prefect, I was assigned a classroom in the Pre-primary section to look after as the teachers were busy with some preparations for a programme. A girl was crying and was asking for her class teacher. I consoled her and tried to explain that her class teacher was busy but would be returning shortly. I tried to distract her and comfort her. This was a small act, so I’m not sure if it made a difference or not, but I hope that she felt a little more comforted in that moment.
How do you balance academic goals with living by moral and ethical principles?
I don’t think this requires much effort, as my academic goals often align with my principles, as the school allows me to succeed and encourages ethical behaviour.

What role do you think human values play in building a better school community?
At the school level, human values encourage helping each other out in academics and extracurricular activities alike, learning from one another, inculcating team spirit and creating a better example for the younger students.
How do you plan to carry forward these values as you move ahead in life?
These values were taught to me from the beginning. However, in a vast and ever-changing world, I know that these values would be challenged, and that increases their importance even more. With the right company and ecosystem around me, for instance my family and the right peers at college, I would forever be led to the path of morality, even if I ever lose my way. The right community and enriching my mind with the right content, like good books, and staying focused on my goals would be helpful to stay grounded and not let my moral compass deviate.
