India’s rich philosophical heritage, encompassing schools like Vedanta, Buddhism, and Jainism, emphasises ethics and morality as cornerstones of a meaningful life. This legacy inspires parents to instil human values in their children for cultural, religious, social, and personal reasons. Such values are vital for holistic development, success, and preserving India’s traditions. In today’s rapidly changing world, parents also prioritise adaptability, resilience, and empathy to prepare children for future challenges.

Apeejay Education upholds this ethos, fostering students’ holistic growth to shape them into ethical individuals embodying honesty, humility, and integrity. To honour those who live by these principles, the institute presents the prestigious Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values. Meet Deepti Raghuram, (academic year 2024-25), a proud recipient of this esteemed recognition, who is in class XII at Apeejay School, Saket.

In a candid interview, this pre-Board exam student talks about the important values.

Tell me a little about yourself. You’re in Class XII—what stream are you pursuing?

This is my Board exam year. And pursuing PCB (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology) with Psychology. I aim to pursue an MBBS in the future with a specialisation in becoming a neurosurgeon. While people have warned that it involves intense studying and is very challenging. But I am determined, and I believe I can achieve it.

How did you feel when you learnt you’d received the award?

I was thrilled because I wasn’t expecting it. I approached the interview honestly, sharing my thoughts from the heart. Deep down, I wanted to win since I’ve been nominated every year since class VI. It’s been a long journey, and receiving this award is truly an honour.

Six consecutive years of nominations! How did you keep going?

It was never disheartening for me. Each year, I learnt something new. I realised that if someone else won, they were more deserving and had qualities I could work on. Over the years, I’ve embraced those qualities and strived to become a better version of myself.

What values or skills have you developed through this journey?

I’ve learnt never to give up. Dr Stya Paul’s philanthropic nature has deeply inspired me. His stories have motivated me to help those in need, to be empathetic, and to truly understand others’ feelings instead of just showing superficial sympathy.

What role has the school played in shaping your values?

The school has been instrumental. During interviews for the award, we often discussed our answers afterwards, which helped me learn from others’ perspectives. This exchange of ideas was an excellent learning experience.  Discussing these with the teachers gave me an idea of how to improve the answers.

Parents are our first teachers. What values have you learned from yours?

My parents have taught me to be down-to-earth and to treat everyone equally. They’ve also instilled in me the importance of being supportive and helpful. I’ve seen them extend help to friends and colleagues in need, whether through financial aid or emotional support.

Have you participated in charity work?

I was part of the Interact Club at school. We organised drives to donate winter clothes, grains, and food to those in need. Being part of these initiatives was a valuable experience.

What is the most important human value everyone should possess?

I believe honesty is the best policy. Even when faced with difficult situations where lying might seem easier, speaking the truth can lead to less severe consequences and fosters trust.

Do you think it’s challenging to live by human values in today’s world?

People often criticise those who follow values, labelling them as overly idealistic. This can influence others to stray from their principles. However, I believe change begins with small steps. If we stay true to our values, regardless of negativity, we can create a significant positive impact.  Values define who we are. By embracing empathy, honesty, and perseverance, we not only improve ourselves but also inspire those around us to strive for a better, more compassionate world.
