Human values are the building blocks of a student’s personal and academic growth. They help shape character, foster positive relationships, guide ethical decision-making, and contribute to the development of responsible and compassionate individuals who are better equipped to succeed in all aspects of life.

In the long run, individuals with strong human values are more likely to achieve success and satisfaction in their personal and professional lives. Employers often seek candidates who not only possess skills but also exhibit strong values like teamwork, integrity, and reliability.

Therefore, Apeejay Education, each year, gives the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values to its students who exhibit humility and integrity. Meet Iqra Naaz from Apeejay School, Saket who was conferred with this award.

Excerpts from the interview.

How does it feel to finally receive this award?

It feels great. I’ve been striving for this award since I was in class VI, continuously nominated every year, reaching the final round but falling short. Getting it this time is truly satisfying. More so, since I secured this prestigious award on the sixth attempt.

Why do you think you didn’t win before, and what changed this time?

In the previous attempts, I struggled to express my thoughts clearly on paper. I believe that’s why I fell short in the questionnaire round during the last two tries. Before that, I was still in a phase of personal development and growth. Over time, I addressed my shortcomings and evolved into who I am today.

Can you describe how you’ve transformed from class VI to class XI?

In class VI, I was somewhat under-confident and less responsible. I’ve since become more self-assured, responsible, and determined. I’ve also cultivated empathy and discipline. These qualities have developed through my experiences at the school.

What was the journey like in developing these qualities in a sometimes selfish world?

The journey has been challenging at times, with moments of doubt. However, my parents and teachers were supportive, emphasising the importance of being the best version of myself. The satisfaction of completing tasks, making a positive impact, and setting a good example for my younger siblings have been motivating factors. I don’t compete with others; my competition is with myself.

How have your parents supported you?

My parents and even my grandparents have always been supportive. They encouraged me, emphasising that the award is not what defines me, but rather the positive change I can make in society. This perspective has shaped my motivation.

You mentioned the importance of discipline. Could you elaborate on that?

Discipline is vital, especially as one progresses in academics and life. It involves making schedules, setting and achieving goals, and maintaining consistency. It has helped me manage both academics and co-curricular activities effectively. Being focused and not getting distracted are key aspects of discipline.

What are you studying, and what career path are you pursuing?

I’m currently pursuing PCB (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology) and aspire to become a cardiologist. The human heart has always fascinated me, and my interest in biology led me to choose this path.

What kind of selfless service would you recommend to others?

I would suggest developing empathy as a starting point. In today’s society, empathy is crucial. Whether it’s donating, supporting charities, or helping people on the streets, the key is to genuinely care for others and take action to make a positive impact.
