He enjoys singing and has been drawn to our culture, religion, and spirituality, which naturally shape many of his interests. In school, he tries to follow the basic human value of respecting elders. When a teacher is explaining something and his understanding is different, he shares his point politely so it never seems disrespectful. Meet Soham Krishna of Class XII at Apeejay School, Saket.

In an impromptu interview, the recipient of Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values shares the role the school played in strengthening these values.

How do you practice values outside of school?

Outside of school, compassion is the value I try to practice most. My parents were the first to teach me this. When I was four, I went to a mall and got a balloon. On the way home, we saw a poor woman with a little child who wanted my balloon. My parents didn’t force me, but gently explained that we could afford another balloon, while that child couldn’t. I gave him the balloon, and he began dancing with such joy that I felt happier watching him than when I first received it. That was the earliest lesson my parents gave me about kindness and thinking of others before myself.

Who or what has been your biggest inspiration on this path?

Since childhood, my grandparents have been narrating stories from The Ramayan and Mahabharat. My greatest inspirations are Lord Krishna and Lord Ram because they show how a true leader should live, with compassion, integrity, and courage. The Suryavansh lineage of Lord Ram, and stories like that of Raja Harishchandra, strengthened my belief in truth and righteousness. My parents have also been constant guides, always reminding me to think of everyone and stay grounded in good values.

What changes have you noticed in yourself after imbibing these values more deeply?

Earlier, I was short-tempered and easily panicked in difficult situations. After reading the scriptures with understanding, I began asking myself what Lord Ram or Krishna would do in that moment. That simple thought helps me stay calm, think clearly, and act with patience.

What role has your school played in strengthening these values?

My teachers, from primary to senior school, have always guided me. My class teacher encourages all of us to follow the right path. Our Principal, Vice-principal, and coordinator also remind us during every event about behaving responsibly, helping others, and carrying ourselves with dignity.

An aspect of Dr Stya Paul that inspires you.

His dedication inspires me the most. His courage and perseverance motivate me to stay determined, no matter how difficult the situation becomes.
