For Class 7 student Avni Sahoo from Apeejay School, Kharghar, kindness is not just an idea — it’s a daily practice. Winner of the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values, Avni believes that being a good human being is as important as excelling in academics. Trained in Kathak, hip-hop, singing, piano and badminton, she balances her many talents with a deep sense of empathy and service.

Avni, congratulations on receiving the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values! How did you feel when you got the news?
Thank you! I was really happy, but more than that, I felt responsible. I take this award as a reminder to keep practising human values every day and to encourage my classmates to do the same.

What does ‘humanity’ mean to you as a student?
For me, education isn’t just about academics — it’s about becoming a good human being. When we build our lives on moral values, everything else falls into place. School life is the perfect time to learn kindness, honesty, and patience, so that we can carry these values throughout our lives.
Who has influenced your understanding of kindness and compassion the most?
My parents and teachers have been my greatest inspirations. I’ve always seen them treat everyone with respect and kindness, even during stressful times. Watching them has taught me to stay calm, patient, and considerate.
Can you share an instance where you helped someone or an animal in need?
Once, I found an injured sparrow on my balcony. I fed her and took care of her until she recovered, and then I released her. I also make it a habit to donate food and clothes on my birthday, and I help my classmates by sharing notes or explaining lessons when they miss school.

What’s your favourite way to make others smile?
I love helping people who are struggling — whether it’s a classmate finding a topic difficult or someone feeling low. Sometimes I tell jokes or simply listen to them. Small acts of care can make a big difference.
Which value do you think defines you the most?
Truth, compassion, and service. These values remind me to do the right thing, even when no one is watching. Dr Stya Paul believed in man-making and nation-building, and I want to contribute to that by being kind and helpful.
How do you plan to continue practising these values?
I’ll keep spreading positivity and kindness around me — at home, in school, and in my community. Every little act counts, and I want to continue making those small differences every day.
