Possessing human values is indispensable as they help us to grow and become human beings.
Every decision that we make is a reflection of our beliefs and values. Such values tend to redirect us towards a specific purpose in our lives, and for that, we must have at least one role model who can guide us through that. It can be your teachers or even parents.
Meet Isha Monga, a student of class VII, studying at Apeejay School, Nerul, who says that her parents and teachers have helped her inculcate human values.
In a candid interview, Isha, the recipient of the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values, speaks about her reaction to getting this prestigious award.
Tell us about yourself.
I am an extremely outgoing person who loves to dance and paint. Moreover, I love gardening and have created a small garden at my place which I like to maintain.
Have you been nominated for this award before? What was your reaction?
No. Surprisingly, this was the first time that I was nominated for this award and fortunately was able to make my way on the very first attempt. I was super proud of myself and felt extremely overjoyed when I was told that I had been selected for the award. It is like a dream come true for every Apeejayite to get this coveted award. It was no different for me.
How have human values affected your life?
I have had human values instilled since birth by my parents; over the years they have guided me at every turn in my life. But after I received this award, I have been feeling more confident and have the right hold on being utmost honest and remaining true to myself. This has further helped me be more aligned with my decisions.
How do you follow a lead of human values outside your classroom?
By being generous and helpful to others. I recall that during COVID-19, there were a lot of people who suffered – they had no food to eat. It was then that my father and I observed and volunteered to help them financially and give them food. A little step towards help can make a big difference to someone else’s life.
Should all schools adopt this kind of award policy?
Yes. This is a great way to inculcate a sense of human values among individuals. It will be a fair activity for not only young kids but also students of higher education.
Role of teachers in instilling human values.
Collectively my parents, grandparents, and all my teachers are responsible for instilling good human values in me. They have always encouraged me to become a good human being.
One thing you would like to imbibe from Dr Stya Paul’s life?
I am highly inspired by the willpower of Dr Stya Paul. Despite being a person with disabilities, he never gave up, instead became one of the most respected figures in his field. I wish I could imbibe his quality of being strong and dedicated to his goal.
One human value everyone must possess. Advice to peers.
Being honest. It is important to help people the needy whenever and wherever possible. We should always be compassionate and remain positive, whatever may be the circumstances. A friend in need is a friend indeed, and we must help each other whenever required.
