At Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, education goes beyond academics — it’s about nurturing character and values. For Class 8 student Ansh Gupta, this philosophy became a way of life, earning him the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values. The award, which recognises students who exemplify compassion, integrity, and selflessness, is one that Ansh holds close to his heart. In this conversation, he shares what it means to live by these values each day.

Read edited excerpts:

Congratulations, Ansh! What does receiving the Dr Stya Paul Award mean to you?

Thank you, ma’am. For me, this award means that the lessons my parents and teachers have taught me — to be respectful, kind, and helpful — truly matter. Even a small act of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life. I try to practice this daily, whether it’s helping classmates or showing respect to everyone around me.

Can you share a moment from school that taught you an important lesson this year?

Yes, I learned the importance of being humble and polite. Once, my classmate was having trouble drawing pie charts in Maths. My teacher asked me to help him, so I explained how to do it. That experience taught me that helping others not only makes them feel supported but also helps us grow as better individuals.

What other acts of kindness do you try to include in your school life?

I believe being a good person is just as important as doing well in studies. Kindness and respect can make our school a happier place. It doesn’t have to be something big — even simple things like sharing notes or encouraging someone can make a difference.

How do your parents and teachers help you live by these values?

My parents, teachers, and friends guide me every day. Our morning assemblies, value education classes, and the way everyone interacts at school have taught me what real human values mean. It’s about being kind, honest, and helpful, even when no one is watching.

You’ve also read about Dr Stya Paul’s life. What inspires you the most about him?

His dedication and strength. Despite facing many hardships he never gave up. He supported his siblings and continued to pursue his dream. That resilience inspires me to stay determined and positive.

Finally, how do you try to live by his ideals of man-making and nation-building?

I try to remember that education is not just about marks. It’s about becoming a good human being and contributing positively to society. This award inspires me to carry Dr Stya Paul’s vision forward through my actions — one kind gesture at a time.
