Values such as global awareness and cultural sensitivity are important and should be instilled in students so that they understand and appreciate diversity. These values work to give a sense of global citizenship and cooperation. Human values impact the personal development and education of the students and can make them all-rounded individuals. These values will prepare the students to face the turmoil, responsibilities, and challenges of adulthood, which will help them to be proper citizens and members of the community.
Meet one such student – Aryan Gehlot, a student of Apeejay School, Nerul. This class XI student (now Class XII) was recently conferred with the coveted Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values.
In an impromptu, he talks about what human values imply.

How did you feel about receiving the award?
I was extremely excited and felt honoured, especially considering the many worthy contenders. Since I have been part of the school for 14 years I had seen seniors receive this award, which I hoped to win someday.
What was the selection process for this award?
One boy and a girl student were selected from each class by the class teacher. Selected students then go through an interview with the Coordinator, Vice-principal, and the Principal, followed by a written exam. Initially, I was not aware that the selection was for the Dr Stya Paul Award. I learnt only during the interview.
Define human values.
These are traits that define personality and make one human. I believe everyone should embody these values. Values like compassion, hard work, and leadership are crucial human qualities.
What values have you learnt from your parents?
My parents have taught me kindness, the importance of helping others and being a good friend. I also value hard work and strive to be a good son.

What aspect of Dr Stya Paul inspires you?
What I admire about Dr Stya Paul is his resilience and achievements from humble beginnings.
What social work are you associated with?
I visit a nearby orphanage monthly, in memory of his late grandfather, providing meals and other necessities. My father and I typically provide an entire meal for a day at the orphanage, occasionally offering aid in cash or kind.
What kind of charity would you suggest?
Kids can join school clubs like the Interact Club that we have at Apeejay School where we contribute to community service by organising events like making rakhi for orphanages or donating diyas and clothes on Diwali. I also advise small biscuit packets and water bottles in the car to give to people in need instead of giving money.
What values have you learnt from your school and teachers?
The school emphasises human values. From a young age, I have learnt values from the nurturing behaviour of teachers and the support of seniors in addressing students’ problems.
