He came to know about getting the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values on the Founder’s Day (academic year 2024-25) just 15 minutes before the announcement. The selection process was quite long, consisting of four to five rounds of interviews. “First, we had interviews with our teachers, then with the Vice-principal, followed by the Principal. After that, there was a written test where we had to answer four to five questions in 50-60 words,” Kartikeya Agarwal, a student at Apeejay School, Noida, shared.
In a candid interview, the Class XI (now Class XII) students defined human values, among other things.
Were you surprised, or did you expect to receive the award?

I was expecting it, but when I didn’t get a call the day before, I lost hope. I assumed that someone else, more deserving, had got the award. But when I got the news on Founder’s Day, I was overjoyed.
What does receiving this prestigious award mean to you?
It is a big achievement for me. Receiving the award on stage from the principal, in front of 300 to 400 students, was a proud moment. Many teachers who didn’t know me before started recognising me, which was a great feeling.
How do you define human values?

For me, human values are the qualities that define a person’s character. Someone might be excellent in studies or sports, but if they lack good values, they may not be a good person. On the other hand, a person with strong values will always be trustworthy and reliable. I believe values are essential in shaping a person’s personality.
Is it challenging for a teenager to live by these values?
Yes, it can be tough. Sometimes, people get bullied for being honest or prioritising others. However, we can try our best to uphold these values and encourage others to do the same. Our teachers constantly support and guide us in following these values.
What are some values that your school has taught you?
I joined this school in Class IV. My school has taught me leadership, generosity, and patience. From my parents, I have learnt kindness, creativity, and responsibility.
Why do you think it is important to be generous at a young age?
I believe in doing charity work because the world is facing many challenges, including poverty. We see people in need everywhere, on the roads, so generosity is essential. Even small acts of kindness can make a difference.
Are you part of any charity organisations or the Interact Club at your school?
Last year, I was part of the Interact Club, but I had to leave this year due to other responsibilities. However, I continue charity work on my own. I donate my old clothes and books, including plastic-covered books. I also contribute money to help people in need whenever I can. Sometimes, I go out specifically to donate to those in need.
Dr Stya Paul was a visionary leader. What is one aspect of his life that inspires you the most?
His leadership. He was an industrialist, yet he led such a vast organisation with vision and responsibility. That truly inspires me. Leadership is essential because someone has to guide the team. Without a leader, there is no direction.
