Human values are the absolute principles and ethical standards which help us climb the ladder of good behaviour and success. They are considered to be important and we must abide by them in the way we speak and present ourselves. For this, Apeejay Schools pan India honour their students with the coveted Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values to recognise their positive contribution to the school. Meet one such recipient — Aarnav Chopra of class VII studying at Apeejay School, Tanda Road in Jalandhar – who is also the vice-captain of Shivalik House.

Excerpts from the interview.

What do you understand by human values?

These are something that has an innate tendency to alter a person’s attitude and behaviour. They can easily be defined as secret ingredients in the recipe of one’s life. In essence, human values are the spark plugs of humanity that transform one’s character into genuine thoughts and actions. It is something that makes a person humane, Chopra added.

How did you feel when you were informed about your big achievement?

I was extremely happy when I got to know that I had been awarded. To be nominated for the same is itself a big achievement for every Apeejayite. It was a proud moment for my parents too. I would not have been able to get this coveted award, had it not been because of the values and attributes my parents have nourished me with.

How do you plan to continue promoting human values in your life?

There is an adage: ‘Charity begins at home’. I will ensure that I continue to make a difference in other people’s lives. An important aspect of human values is, to help others in need. I hope I am able to set a great example for others by following my values and kindness.

Do you think this award will influence your future?

Yes. Although I believe I am very young right now, there are still many doors that I need to unlock and keep moving at the same pace to learn more about human values. To become an empathetic and compassionate person, we must keep practicing our human values.

Who is your role model?

My role models are my parents and teachers. Every week, there is a human value class where we are taught about these values, their importance, and how to practice them. My parents have always taught me to be a good human being. Kindness is the key here. It is all because of my parents and teachers that I received this prestigious award.

Anything that you would like to imbibe in your life that reflects the essence of Dr Stya Paul?

Dr Stya Paul was a very inspiring individual and possessed remarkable qualities.

All my school life until now, I have learnt a lot about him. To mention any one attribute will be an understatement. Dr Stya Paul was very focused and devoted to the goal of his life. If I can imbibe even a percentage of his attributes in my life, I will be highly contended.

On what basis do you think you were nominated for this award?

I am extremely disciplined. There are numerous human values that one must imbibe in their life. It is important to be kind and selfless. My dedication and willingness to follow these values will foster my well-being along with those who are around me. It is imperative to stay true to yourself while everything else will fall into place on its own.
