Gone are the days when the parents were only concerned with the marks of their wards. Today, in a competitive world, even the slightest edge over another can make a huge impact. Therefore, it is not surprising that students are going out of their way to be part of community service like charity work, teaching underprivileged kids, or raising money to feed the hungry.

To honour such students, Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values is given to Apeejay Education students who exemplify and exhibit good human values in their day-to-day lives. Meet one such student of Apeejay School, Nerul – Jyoti Jain, who recently passed out of class XII.

How did you feel when you learnt you were selected for the award?

I was shocked. Our academic coordinator told me the news when I was about to leave for home last year. I was on cloud nine, smiling widely. She mentioned I would receive the award on Founder’s Day, which made me feel proud and excited.

Did you know about the award during the selection process?

Yes, I knew it was for the Dr Stya Paul Award. I was nervous initially since it was my first time being selected for something like this, but I overcame my fear. I stayed true to myself without feeling pressured. I spoke honestly and expressed my genuine thoughts and feelings.

Which trait of Dr Stya Paul inspired you the most?

Resilience. He faced many obstacles but stayed determined, patient, and self-believing, which helped him grow and achieve his goals.

How would you define human values?

Human values are basic principles that every person should possess to become a better individual. They are fundamental beliefs that shape a person’s character and personality. Empathy, honesty, kindness, treating everyone equally, helping others, resilience, and being disciplined are some common values that everyone must imbibe.

What values did you learn from your parents, and how have they shaped you?

My parents have emphasised empathy, hard work, discipline, respecting others, and treating everyone equally. They encouraged me to donate to orphanages during festivals like birthdays or Vasant Panchami, promoting kindness and generosity.

Do you regularly engage in charity work?

Not regularly, but during occasions like Diwali, I donate clothes and buy items from street vendors to help them. I believe any form of charity is valuable — donating money, items, or even knowledge by teaching others about education, hygiene, or personal health. Every small effort counts.

What values have you learnt from your school and teachers?

I was a part of this school since nursery. It’s been 13 years. Some qualities that I learnt were: Leadership, discipline, and the belief that hard work and determination can help achieve any goal. My teachers encouraged and guided me to reach my potential while emphasising the importance of discipline and perseverance.
