For Class 12 student Ridhima Shankar of Apeejay School, Kharghar, living with values is more than just a moral choice — it’s a way of life. A recipient of the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values, Ridhima embodies empathy, honesty, and compassion in her everyday actions. Deeply inspired by animals and nature, she dreams of becoming a veterinarian one day and opening an animal shelter to care for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Read edited excerpts:

What does living with values mean to you?

Values are very important because they shape our beliefs, actions, and personality. In today’s world, living with values helps us stay grounded and aware of how we treat others in society.

How would you describe yourself as a student and person?

I’d say I’m hardworking and curious. Even if I don’t always top every exam, I try my best to give my 100%. I enjoy art, dancing, and researching about animals and nature. I also have a deep love for animals — they bring me peace and purpose.

Was there a time when your values guided a tough decision?

Yes, once I was on my way to a test and saw an injured cat. I knew I couldn’t just walk away. I carefully moved it to a safe spot before heading for my exam. It made me feel that doing the right thing matters more than being on time.

What makes the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values special to you?

Academic awards measure knowledge, but this award recognises who we are as people. It’s about honesty, kindness, and compassion — qualities that define our character and actions.

What value defines you the most?

Honesty. Even when the truth is hard to say, I choose it because it keeps me authentic.

How does Dr Stya Paul’s philosophy inspire you?

His determination to educate and uplift others motivates me deeply. He built something lasting and meaningful, and that encourages me to stay focused on my own goals.

You dream of becoming a vet — what inspired this path?

Since childhood, whenever I saw an injured animal, I’d feel helpless. That’s when I decided I wanted to become a veterinarian and one day open an animal shelter. I’m preparing for NEET, and my teachers at Apeejay guide me whenever I have doubts.
