In an increasingly competitive global environment, children need to be equipped with a wide range of skills and abilities. Holistic development and human values are important for students because they not only contribute to their individual growth and well-being but also prepare them to be responsible, compassionate, and successful members of society. These approaches nurture the whole person, addressing not only academic knowledge but also the skills, values, and qualities that lead to a more fulfilling and purposeful life.

Therefore, it is not surprising that students are looking for ways that can give them an edge over others to go that extra mile when it comes to their future endeavours. Meet one such student of Apeejay School, Rama Mandi – Jasmeet Kaur Singh – who was recently conferred with the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values.

In a candid interview, the student talks about how she has become more confident with time.

What was your reaction when you finally got the award?

I was very happy to receive the award since I had been nominated for the award earlier as well. I felt very happy when I found out I got it. I wouldn’t say that I was disappointed or upset when I didn’t get the award the last few times since other students were far more deserving than me.

Do you think you did something differently this time around to win the award?

I was more confident this time, and I answered confidently, which made a difference. I think that since I am in a senior class, I have matured over the years and this was reflected in my behaviour and the way I presented myself during the interview and test.

Why do you think human values are important for a student?

Human values help students grow and manage risk situations better in life.  These values help students to be able to think calmly in crises. The reason why I got this award this time is that I am disciplined, and I work hard to achieve my goals.

When you talk about discipline, why is it important?

Discipline helps me focus on my work, manage my time better, and achieve my goals more effectively. I believe that this trait must be imbibed by students. As you grow older, time management becomes necessary. Being disciplined will help you manage time better.

Have you decided what you want to do when you are in class 11?

I plan to opt for Science non-medical and non-engineering fields. I’m interested in pursuing architecture. I love designing and creating beautiful places and structures. It gives me a sense of satisfaction when I see something that I created come to life.

What role have your parents played in ensuring you’ve inculcated these human values?

My parents have been very supportive of my goals and have always helped me in the right direction. My teachers have aided me in overcoming any study-related problems and have been very supportive of my growth.

What aspect of Dr Stya Paul inspires you?

What inspired me about his life was his enthusiasm and determination to achieve his goals despite the roadblocks he faced.
