She is, at present, the Head Girl at Apeejay School, Greater Noida. Pursuing Humanities, this Class XII student has been recently conferred with the prestigious Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values for exemplifying compassion, determination, and integrity in both her academic and personal life. In a candid interview, Dakshita Singh talks about the principles that are essential to live by.
Tell us about yourself.
I truly believe in learning beyond the classroom and finding something to learn in every space I go. If anything piques my interest, I like to explore it. I’d also call myself a self-proclaimed poet. I love reading and writing poetry because it’s an outlet that gives me clarity and perspective. Apart from that, I enjoy watching sports. In fact, my dream is to become a sports journalist.
What principles do you believe are essential to live by human values in today’s world?
I believe determination is the foundation of all human values. It helps a person stay true to their goals and maintain integrity and a strong sense of self. When someone is determined, they naturally learn honesty and perseverance. Determination allows all other values to flourish and helps us achieve our goals.
Who or what has been your biggest inspiration in understanding kindness and human values?
I’ve grown up in a joint family with my grandparents and parents, and that has shaped me deeply. My elders have always taught me different lessons, each contributing to my understanding of what it means to live with values. Along with that, Apeejay School has been a part of my life since the beginning. The school’s environment and philosophy have played a big role in shaping who I am today.
How do you demonstrate these simple habits of human values in your daily life?
For me, kindness is the simplest yet most powerful way to live by human values. Being kind costs nothing, but it can mean everything to someone else. We never know what another person might be going through, so being understanding and gentle in our actions can make a real difference in ways we don’t even realise.

How do you plan to continue living by these values?
I want to incorporate these values into everything I do — whether it’s writing, studying, or leading as the Head Girl of my school. I believe it’s important to use our roles and talents to spread messages of empathy, understanding, and honesty. Even simple acts, like setting an example for others, can leave a lasting impact. It’s always the small things that matter most.
What lesson about compassion or humility would you like to share with younger students?
We often think that being compassionate makes us seem weak. Being respectful doesn’t mean you’re undermining yourself; it shows that you can stay grounded no matter how much you achieve. Small acts of kindness help us build stronger, more meaningful connections with others.
How have your teachers helped you imbibe these values?
The teachers didn’t just teach us about human values; they lived them every day. Through their patience, understanding, and actions, they showed us how these principles can truly impact a person’s life.
