Handloom weaving is an age-old craft that has been practiced in India for centuries. It represents a deep-rooted tradition that is integral to the country’s cultural and historical identity. The intricate patterns and designs of handloom fabrics are not just visually appealing but also embody the stories and skills passed down through generations.
National Handloom Day, celebrated annually on August 7th, is a time to honor and recognise the rich heritage of handloom weaving in India. This day is dedicated to highlighting the importance of handloom textiles and the artisans who create them.
To help students gain more information about Handloom weaving, Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park conducted a workshop on the significance of Handloom.

The event was led by Ms Malvika Halwasiya, a committee member of the Delhi Crafts Council, and was introduced by a warm welcome address from the Vice Principal of the school, Ms Vandana Bansal.
Ms Malvika Halwasiya commenced the session with an engaging presentation that delved into the rich history and significance of handloom weaving in India. Her presentation was enriched by a display of traditional handloom fabrics, which highlighted the artistry and intricate craftsmanship involved in creating these textiles.

Students were introduced to the evolution of various fabrics and the regions they originate from, providing them with a broader understanding of the diverse cultural heritage represented by handloom products.
The workshop also featured a video demonstration that showcased the detailed process of handloom weaving. Students had the opportunity to observe the different types of looms and weaving techniques, gaining insight into the skill and precision required for this traditional craft. The hands-on experience and visual exposure deepened their appreciation for the craftsmanship involved.

The session concluded with an encouragement for students to actively support and promote handloom products, reinforcing their role in preserving and celebrating India’s rich cultural heritage.
By recognising its significance, we contribute to the well-being of artisans, support sustainable practices, and preserve a vital part of our cultural heritage
