Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA) organised an innovative and educative poster-making competition for students recently. Conducted by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, ACFA, the competition was themed on press laws in India.
The Constitution of India guarantees freedom of the press and media as a fundamental right. There are some restrictions though under Article 19(2) around the interests of sovereignty and integrity of India, security of the state, public order, decency, morality, in relation to contempt of course, defamation, or incitement to an offense.
In 2022, however, India’s press freedom fell to 150 out of 180 countries, its lowest ever, as per the Press Freedom Index published annually by Reporters Without Borders.
Some of the topics covered in the competition included Contempt of Court, Copyright, Right to Information, Official Secret Act, and the Law of Defamation. The participants created beautiful, thought-provoking posters, and their efforts were lauded by all.
Aditya Sahni, Nandini Singh, and Ritik Sharma secured the first, second, and third positions respectively.
Addressing students, Dr Neerja Dhingra, principal, ACFA, spoke about the significance of such a competition. She stressed the need to make the youth aware of media ethics and press laws to be able to perform their duties efficiently without getting caught up in any legal trouble.
She encouraged ACFA students to continue to participate in such activities. She further appreciated the efforts made by faculty members Nivedita Khosla and Surbhi Tandon from the college’s Journalism department.
The college, which believes in imparting practical knowledge to students, frequently organises such interesting events to promote critical thinking and innovative ideas. Recently, the students also celebrated World Radio Day where they learnt about the various aspects of the medium and participated in events like news reading, radio talk, storytelling, poetry, and radio interview.
