The thrill and anticipation to prepare the most enticing enlightening retorts for motions of debate is next-level devotion for these both. Meet Iqra Naaz and Sumayya Nazira of Class XII and XI respectively at Apeejay School, Saket. These two wizards of words share their stories about how they bagged the first prize at a recent state-level English debate competition held recently at Chhatrasal Stadium.
For the start, Iqra shares her experience during the event, “Public speaking has always been a passion of mine. Over the past few years, I’ve won first place in state-level extempore, secured a district-level mono-acting title, and actively participated in various debates, dramas, and other competitions. Debating, in particular, has a unique thrill— it’s a dynamic exchange of ideas, a battle of perspectives, and always an extremely fun experience.”
Expressing similar sentiments, Sumayya shares, “I went for the state-level debate competition early on in December and was indeed elated on learning of the results. Especially because I felt that our chances of bagging the first position were a little ambiguous since all the participants there were very proficient orators. So, initially, I regarded it as a valuable learning experience even if we did not win. But of course, I got to know the results in school within a few days, and was brimming with gratitude and joy.”
Speaking about their preparation, they both credit their accolades to their school teachers who helped them to ace their game.

“Apeejay School’s support through this entire journey has been colossal. Beginning with our Principal sir, Dr. Sujeet Eric Masih, who provided us with this opportunity and profoundly supported us with his reassurance, enthusiasm and valuable advice, our Vice-principal who wholeheartedly shared our zeal since before the competitions and from whom I got to know the serendipitous results, our Academic Coordinator who always had her radiant smile to boost our confidence and to remind us that our nature is to soar high. My heartfelt gratitude is towards our English mentor who guided us, motivated us, and nurtured us in every step, without fail. Finally, it is the entire Apeejay School family which has a great role in grooming and developing me into the personality I am today,” shared Sumayya.
“My language teachers have been instrumental in refining my skills. My class teacher has been incredibly supportive, helping me manage my commitments effectively. I remember thinking about missing the state level due to all the events but it was she who motivated me to participate and told me that I could manage everything. Their guidance and encouragement have truly made a difference in my journey.” Iqra added.
Their preparation strategies were systematically designed too.
The topics across different rounds included social media, universal basic income, and limits on freedom of expression. Their first step was thorough research — gathering real-life case studies and as many examples as possible, as they significantly strengthen an argument and make it more convincing. The next step was structuring our content effectively; the way ideas are presented is just as important as the ideas themselves.

“To make our arguments more interesting and catchy for the audience, we incorporated witty remarks, sarcasm, rhetorical questions, and a strong, critical tone. I often ended my points with rhetorical questions, keeping the audience engaged. Using quotes from influential figures also added weight to my arguments. Finally, we focused on how to present the content. I ensured a confident body language, Impactful tone and expressive hand gestures,” both said in unison.
While both Iqra and Suyamma’s primary goal is to pursue medicine, till then they are busy challenging others with their pearls of wisdom.
