A Class VIII student, Viraj Nischal, of Apeejay School Model Town, Jalandhar, has been steadily building his presence in competitive cricket through consistent performances and quiet focus. His recent success at the Under-14 Jalandhar District Cricket Association tournament, where his team emerged as winners, marked an important milestone in his growing journey. With this achievement, he is now preparing to step into the Under-16 category in the coming months.

One of his most defining moments came last year while playing for Powerplay Cricket Academy, when he scored 121 runs off 106 balls against New Delhi’s YSCE Academy. In a candid interview, he shares how he has been playing the game for a long time, strengthening his confidence, among other things.

How did your interest in cricket begin?

I got interested in cricket by watching matches on television and playing with my friends. Slowly, my interest grew stronger, and I started taking the game more seriously.

How was your experience playing at the District Cricket Association tournament?

Participating in the Jalandhar District Cricket Association tournament was a proud moment for me. Playing at the district level taught me teamwork, discipline, and confidence. Winning the tournament with my teammates made the experience even more special.

How do you manage academics along with cricket?

A. I make sure that both my academics and sports are taken care of daily. I usually attend school regularly, but sometimes I have to take leave because of matches. Even then, I ensure that I complete all my schoolwork on time.

Who is your favourite cricketer and why?

It is Virat Kohli. I see him as my idol because of his discipline, hard work, and mindset. He inspires me a lot, and I dream of becoming like him one day.

How has your school supported your journey as a sportsperson?

Apeejay School has played a very important role in my journey. The school has always supported me by allowing leave for matches. My teachers regularly ask me about my games and encourage me. I am grateful because the school provides an environment that helps me grow both academically and as a sportsperson.

What are your next goals in cricket?

After winning the Under-14 tournament, I will now be playing in the Under-16 category in March. I am looking forward to learning more and improving with every match.
